Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord. Matthew 25:21

The Reverend William Hugh Heard was called home by the Lord Saturday, the 3rd of June 2017.

He was born on the 30th of December 1935, to Charles Hugh Heard and Nell Gene Caldwell. He had an older sister he adored, Ruth Waldo Heard Randolph who was wife of Peyton Nowlin Randolph.

Fr. Bill was a servant of the Lord in the military, parish schools, hospitals, and priesthood. He served parishes in Houston, East Texas, Dallas, and the Rio Grande Valley.

He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1957 where he was in the Corps of Cadets and marching band and became the first Chaplain of the Band. He graduated from the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin and was then ordained deacon and priest. He was in the Politics in Literature PhD program at the University of Dallas and was published in National Review in 1977. He enjoyed preaching and did it well in good time.

In 1987 he and his family established Saint Nicholas School in Houston. He served as Chaplain from that time and enjoyed teaching religion and history to middle school children.

In 2008 the family moved to the Lazy A Ranch in Bellville where they became involved in ranching and raising grass fed beef. Bill was a romantic and enjoyed surprising his wife with handwritten poems. Sometimes they were from a cow or bull who wanted to tell her thank you or about their experiences.

Fr. Bill enjoyed teaching a weekly Bible class there and became active in St. Barnabas Anglican Church. His friends there are very dear to him.

He spent twenty-four days in intensive care in Bryan from an infection related to antibiotic use. His family faithfully attended him there, and Fr. Wayland Coe ministered to him, as well as Monsignor John Malinowski, the hospital chaplain.

Family members are Margot Ellen Terry Heard, wife of fifty-four years; son Thomas William Heard; daughters Margot Elizabeth Heard Clarke and husband Kevin McGregor Clarke; Anne Matilda Heard Patin and husband Jeffrey Jude Patin; and Ruth Terry Heard Lewman and husband Jeffery Scott Lewman. Papa Bill's grandchildren include Thomas William Heard II, Lucy Elizabeth Clarke, Leia Rene Heard, Hugh McGregor Clarke, Luke Benjamin Heard, Andrew William Patin, Joseph George Patin, and Charles Patrick Patin. Nephews are Peyton Nowlin Randolph and William Robert Randolph, and families. Nieces are Cassandra Elisabeth Berry and Laura Berry Westbrook and families. Sisters-in-law are Lenora Anne Berry, Marylynn Terry deRouen Selzer, and step-sister Matilda Walker Henry. Included is Karen Outland, a very special family friend he adored who moved to the ranch to be with us.

He was engaged in all family activities and was a great help and wonderful listener. He did so much for us and will be profoundly missed. He was most proud of his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and loved spending time with them at the ranch and beach. He loved to sail and did so when the children were younger. He attained Power Squadron credentials in the valley for his sailing activities.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six o'clock until eight o'clock in the evening on Friday, the 9th of June, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, where Family Evening Prayers will commence at six o'clock.

A Choral Eucharist will be celebrated at ten o'clock in the morning on Saturday, the 10th of June, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 4900 Jackwood Street in Houston, where the Rev. David O. Browder is to serve as Celebrant and the Rev. Wayland N. Coe will concelebrate.

The family will gather at a later date for a burial at the Lazy A Ranch.

In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed towards the charity of one's choice.
