Retired Lt. Col. C.A. 'Hap' Veley, Jr., 87 passed away peacefully on May 14, 2017 at Harbor Chase Assisted Living in Gainesville. He was born on August 13, 1929 to Corydon and Janet Veley in Sanford, Florida.
He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville. In 1949 he was initiated into the Kappa Alpha Order and graduated from the University of Florida 1951 with a degree in Building Construction. Upon graduation he got a job with the Army Corp of Engineers in Jacksonville, but was drafted into the US Army in 1952. Served in the Korean War 1952-53. In 1953 he graduated from Officers Candidate School, first in his class. Stationed in Okinawa 1954-56. In 1960 he graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in Civil Engineering. Went to Advanced Engineer School at the Pentagon in Washington DC and then to New Delhi, India where he was a Military Attaché at the American Embassy 1964-67. Served in the Vietnam War 1968-69. Was a Professor of Military Science with the UF ROTC 1969-73. While at UF he was the Faculty Advisor and Alumni Advisor for the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. In 1971 he oversaw the construction of the KA House on Fraternity Row. Retiring May 31, 1973. Among his medals are the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service, two Air Medals and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.
After retirement he purchased Central Builder Supplies of Gainesville, Inc, where he worked full time until he was 85. He loved his work and his family. He was an avid Gator fan, a Bull Gator for over 10 years, a member of the Florida Tip Off Club, the Dugout Club and the Gainesville Quarterback Club. He was a life member of the Gainesville Homebuilders Association. In 2005 he was inducted into the Kappa Alpha Court of Honor. In 2009 he was inducted into Sigma Lambda Chi, the construction honor society at the UF ME Rinker School of Building Construction. He was a member of the Elk's Lodge #990, Once a Month Bunch and a charter member of the Gainesville Bass Masters.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Arena Veley and his brother Kelly Veley. He is survived by his brother Hugh John Veley, Lake Placid, son Cory Veley and wife Debbie, daughter Debbie McMonigle and husband Mark, three grandchildren, Chip Veley, Sandy Clarke and Haidee Brannan, two great granddaughters Riley Brannan and Brinleigh Clarke, and many dear nieces and nephews and their families.
A full military honors service will be held at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Haven Hospice of Gainesville in his memory.
