James Horace Sherrill
November 11, 1929 ~ May 21, 2017 (age 87)

James (Jim) Horace Sherrill, 87, passed away May 21, 2017 in Corpus Christi, Texas from complications of Alzheimer's disease. He was born in San Marcos, Texas on November 11, 1929. He grew up with his sisters Patty Sullivan and Dorothy Tolar and brother Malcolm along with his parents Malcolm and Julia. Jim graduated from San Marcos High School in 1948 before attending Texas A&M. In that era, all students were in the Corp of Cadets. He graduated with a degree in business in 1952. After graduation, Jim entered the Army and rose to the rank of Captain while flying both fixed wing and rotary aircraft. After his service in the Army he enjoyed a profession as a corporate accountant and administrator as well as running his own personal accounting firm. Jim was involved with many civic service activities including past president of both the Port Aransas Rotary Club and school board as well as mayor of Port Aransas. He also enjoyed being a member of the Corpus Christi Aggie Century Club, association of former students, and rooting his beloved Aggies to victory year after year…. as painful as that may have been at times! Jim was a member of Grace Presbyterian church in Corpus Christi, Texas where he participated in choir and transportation of elderly members to and from church. Jim was an avid swimmer for many years of his adult life. He was a veracious reader, amateur artist, and loved to work crossword puzzles. Jim and Nona were 30 year residents of Port Aransas moving to Corpus Christi in 2000 and spent the last four years at The Mirador retirement community where Nona still resides. He and Nona celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary this past year. He is survived by his wife, Nona; his son Mike Sherrill; his son Scott Sherrill and daughter-in-law Debbie; his son Jim Sherrill and daughter-in-law Judi; his daughter Elizabeth “Libby” Gibbs and son-in-law Matt Gibbs; his daughter Jennifer Ross and son-in-law Tracy Ross; his sister Patty Sullivan and Dorothy Toler; grandchildren Alli Haltom and her husband Stephen, Parker Sherrill, Sarah Conley, Megan Gibbs, John Paul Gibbs; Jake Ross, Jonah Ross, and Kate Ross; great granddaughter Harper Elizabeth; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 27, at 1:00 p.m. at Seaside Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 4357 Ocean Drive, Corpus Christi, Texas 74812.
