Charles Thomas, 97, of Sulphur Springs, Texas, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 25, 2017, at Carriage House Farm Cottage surrounded by family and his amazing nurses. He was born in Austin, Texas, Feb. 14, 1920, on Valentine's Day. After high school, he attended Texas A&M, where he completed 3 years. He then accepted a job which led to a very lengthy and successful career as a printing salesman. Charles also served in the Air Corps in World War II as a navigator. On May 26, 1942, he married Dixie Marie Allen in Springfield, Mass., where Charles was stationed at Westover Field. She was definitely the love of his life and his #1 focus and priority. To say that Charles was a very active person would be a huge understatement. He enjoyed so many things, including tennis, water skiing, driving, flying, volunteering, but above everything, he loved cycling. He experienced many wonderful adventures(as well as a few hardships) while riding. He went on various bike trips all over the country and even rode in England during some violent domestic unrest there. During his later years, he was still riding much farther than most individuals could ride. He was an active member in Baptist churches in Austin, Houston and Sulphur Springs. While in Austin, he attended Baptist Study Fellowship. After he and Dixie moved to Sulphur Springs in 2001, he attended Community Bible Study. Charles even went to Milwaukee on mission trips when he was in his 80s. He served as a deacon at Hyde Park Baptist Church in Austin. Charles truly had a servant's heart. He humbly went about his days helping people and exhibiting God's love to others. He was loved and respected by many people. When Dixie developed Alzheimer's, his primary goal was to see that she received the best care possible. He tried to effectively meet her every need. His devotion to her became the envy of everyone who was fortunate to witness it. The family would like to give special thanks to the wonderful nurses, aides and staff at the Farm Cottage for the exceptional, loving care Charles received during his 3 1/2 year stay. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dixie; and their son, Charles Ray Thomas. Survivors include his daughter, Jo, and his son-in-law, Tommy Evans of Sulphur Springs; his daughter-in-law, Trisha Thomas of Katy, Texas; his grandchildren, Todd Evans and wife Tempe of Sulphur Springs, Texas, Bryan Evans and wife Traci of Katy, Texas, Chantel Zunker and husband Ronald of Boerne, Texas, and Wendy Mensik and husband Jason of Katy, Texas; his great-grandchildren, Kaden and MaKayla Evans, and Brooklynn Shelton, all of Sulphur Springs, Kyle and Amanda Evans of Katy, Isabelle and Andrew of Katy, and Ashley, Shelby, Libby, Macey and Luke, all of Boerne; a cousin, Marian Rogers and husband Fred of Austin; and nieces, nephews and other family members. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund or the Milwaukee Mission Trip. At this time, there will be no service.
