Clifford Piper
April 21, 1931 - April 04, 2012

Marblehead...

Clifford L. Piper died peacefully on April 4th in the hospice of Salem Hospital in Salem, MA due to complications of advanced prostate cancer.

Born in Tulsa, OK, in 1931, he grew to be a unique and self-made man, with a renaissance-like intellectual curiosity and a superb sense of self-discipline.

After graduating from Texas A&M University, and serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, Clifford worked as a construction manager for several companies and as a professor of construction technology at Purdue University in Indiana. When he moved to Connecticut in the 1960s, he married Mildred M. Crowley with whom he enjoyed a splendid family life for over forty-five years.

A well-read man who valued life-long education, Cliff acquired a M.A. in English from Trinity College in the 1970s. A few decades later after retirement, Cliff and Millie moved to Marblehead, MA to be closer to children and grandchildren and enjoy the nearby seashore. Apart from his career and family life, Clifford always pursued interests in the arts, literature, and languages, and since retirement has enjoyed travels in Europe, visiting art museums, attending performances of theater, opera, and music, and was especially fond of watching and discussing films with Millie.

In addition to his wife Millie, he is survived by four children, Elizabeth Heming and her husband William (of Staten Island, NY), Marylee Riester and her husband David (of Lynnfield, MA), Michael Piper and his wife Mercedes (of Marblehead, MA), and Daniel Piper and his wife Estela (of Phoenix, AZ); ten grandchildren, William and Ryan Heming, Benjamin and Henry Riester, Sophia, Caterina, Michael, William, and Hardison Piper, Yeserin Rosa Vizcaino; and many extended family members.

The family will hold a private memorial for Cliff Piper on Saturday, April 7th in Marblehead, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Cliff to the Cancer Center at the Massachusetts General Hospital (https://give.massgeneral.org) or the Hospice of the North Shore (www.hns.org). Condolences may be left on the electronic Guest Book at the website of Murphy Funeral Home, www.murphyfuneralhome.com
