Edwin Loyd Glazener, MD November 14, 1923 - May 2, 2017 San Diego - Edwin Loyd Glazener died peacefully in his sleep at his home on May 2, 2017, at the age of 93. He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Helen, his sons and daughters-in-law Charles and Micou, and Christopher and Ann, and his daughter Gretchen, and son-in-law Kirk Avery, as well as seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and his sister, Una Grace Nash of Huntsville, Texas. Ed was born in the small Texas town of Fairfield. He attended Texas A&M University before medical school at Baylor College of Medicine. It was during his internship in Minneapolis that Ed met a young nurse, Helen Hall, and convinced her to marry him before he was to be stationed in Wiesbaden, West Germany. Ed served as a flight surgeon in the Army Air Corps during the Berlin Airlift. Ed and Helen returned to Cleveland, Ohio, for his residency at the Cleveland Clinic specializing in Anesthesiology. In 1952, after completing his training, they ventured to San Diego upon the recommendation of Dr. Gene Rumsey, Sr. For 52 years he practiced anesthesia, primarily at Mercy Hospital. Ed loved caring for patients and he loved Mercy Hospital and the Sisters of Mercy. Ed served as Chief-of-Anesthesia and Chief-of- Staff at Mercy Hospital. He coached baseball and served as President of the Presidio Little League. He also served on the Board and as President of the San Diego Blood Bank. Since 1959, he was a member of the downtown Rotary and always sang in their Christmas Choir. Ed loved the San Diego Zoo, served on zoo advisory committees, and enjoyed participating in the Mentor Program at Hoover High School. He was a member of the R&A Club. Ed loved his wife and family and all people in general. He enjoyed quail hunting and camping in Baja California with his sons and other friends, growing orchids, studying words and sharing them with his grandchildren, raising tortoises, and fixing things. The life of Edwin Loyd Glazener will be celebrated on Saturday, May 20, at 2:30 in the afternoon at St. James-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, 743 Prospect Street in La Jolla. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Scripps Mercy Hospital Foundation or St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church Landscape Fund.
