Donald Stephen Burns
April 30, 1929 - May 2, 2017

Donald S. Burns, 88, of Houston Texas, passed away, Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at his home in Grapevine. Graveside services will be held at Caldwell Masonic Cemetery in Caldwell, Texas on Saturday May 6. 2017 at 12 noon. Visitation prior to the service at 10:30 at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home. The celebration of life will continue Saturday evening at 5:30 in Houston at their home.
Don was born April 30, 1929 in Beaumont, Texas to Don and Idella Burns. He was reared in Port Arthur Texas and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and then earned his Mechanical Engineering degree from Texas A&M University – class of “51. On December 22, 1951, he married Verene Norville of Caldwell, Texas. They have always been active members of a church. They were Charter members of Champions Forest Baptist Church where they have remained members for the past 40 years.
Upon graduation Don entered the Air Force at the end of the Korean war. He served in Japan as a communications officer. After the service, he began his career as a metallurgist with Rockwell manufacturing company. After a long tenure with Cameron Iron works, he finished his career with Schumacher Companies. Don was on the Research Board of Directors for Texas A & M and was a distinguished chairman in developing the MR-01-75 NACE standard. He retired at the age of 72.
Don enjoyed life to the fullest. He was an avid pilot receiving his pilot’s license at 16 years old. He loved the outdoors; you could always find him on the golf course or in his boat scaring up the fish. He also enjoyed reading, gardening and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Don is survived by his wife Verene of 65 years, his two children, Bob Burns and wife Tammy, Marian Burns Thorsell and husband Bill. His grandchildren Samantha and her husband Cody Cooper, Cody Burns, Stephen, Christina, and Holly Thorsell, and Great Grand Children Peyton and Kaylee Cooper. Brother Timonthy G. Burns, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Sondra, sister Charmian Flanagan, and parents Donald and Idella Burns.
Pallbearers will be Cody Burns, Stephen Thorsell, Cody Cooper, Bill Thorsell, Roger Burns, Tim Burns, Stephen Burns, and Lee Flanagan.
A wonderful Christian Man – caring for all he encountered. A lifetime of wonderful memories. Loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather who will be held in our hearts forever.
