Joe Hershey – April 22, 2017

Joe Hershey, 83, of Amarillo died April 22, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.

Visitation will be Monday, 6-7 pm at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at the San Jacinto Church of Christ, Amarillo, at 10:00am Tuesday, April 25, 2017 with Dale Dennis and Glen Walton, ministers of the church, and son, Tom, conducting the service. Burial will be at 4:00 pm, Tuesday, in the Darrouzett Cemetery.

Joe was born May 29, 1933 on a farm west of Hereford to Horace and Juanita Turner Hershey. He married Sue Scarth, the love of his life, April 24, 1955 in Hereford and they were married almost 62 years.

He served the Lord that he loved so dearly by being an elder in the church at both Texline and San Jacinto for over 25 years.

In 1949, when he was a senior in high school, he was elected as the first president of the Future Farmers of America in Hereford High School. He served as president of the Chapter Conducting Team which won first place in state competition that year.

Joe graduated from Texas A&M, class of 1954, with Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science. He used his positive leadership personality to be very successful in his work both for the Lord and in jobs and business during his lifetime. He was Lipscomb County Ag Extension Agent for six years and general manager of the Darrouzett Co-op elevator and service station another six years. He enjoyed farming with the help of his wife, Sue, and their children at Texline for over twenty years. He enjoyed living in Amarillo his remaining years.

He leaves behind his wife, Sue, three children, Doug of Amarillo, Lenita and Earl Unruh of Blossom, Texas and Tom and Letha of Monte Vista, Colorado. Grandchildren include Isaac and Sara Unruh, Chris and Heather Unruh and Trey and Kelli Unruh all of Blossom, Texas, Andy Hershey of Lubbock and Katie and Nick Renteria of Claude. His eight great-grandchildren are Grace, Paul, Caleb, Cooper, Hallie and Luke Unruh and Cecilia and Kelsey Renteria. Other survivors are his brothers Sam Hershey of Yantis, Texas and Homer Hershey of The Woodlands, Texas, brothers-in-law Dale, Bob and Jack Scarth, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Horace and Juanita Turner Hershey.

The family suggest memorials be sent to the San Jacinto Church of Christ, 823 Mississippi, Amarillo, TX, 79106 or your favorite charity.
