Collier A. (Guss) Campbell
Collier A. (Guss) Campbell was born Nov. 12, 1920, in Goosecreek, (Harris County) Texas to Collier
H. and Will Eva Simpson Campbell and passed away April 2, 2017 in Prescott, Arizona. He attended public schools in Jasper, Texas, and was a graduate of Texas A&M with a degree in Architecture. Commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the Army in 1942, he served in the Pacific
Theater attaining the rank of Lt. Colonel in the Corps of Engineers. In California, during the war, he met and married Army Nurse, Muriel Tyerman. He moved to Texas City in 1947 to work in an engineering capacity for the Pan American Refining Corporation.
Leaving Pan American in 1948, he associated himself with the firm of Ben Milam-Architect, performing work in Galveston, Texas City and the general area. In 1952 he returned to Amoco Oil Company and a 30 year career in technical and supervisory assignments.
He retired from AMOCO in 1981. In 2006 he relocated to Prescott, Arizona, near his family located in that city
Mr. Campbell was a member of First United Methodist Church serving as Chairman of the Official Board, Lay Leader, church school teacher, lay speaker and in various lay capacities. His participation in civic affairs included: Chairman of a committee that developed
the first building code for Texas City, service on the Texas City Housing Authority Board, Chairman of the city Zoning Commission, membership on various city boards and committees including: Chairman Goals 2000, Bay Street Park development, City Charter review
committee, planning and construction of Moore Public Library, as well as early additions to the County Memorial Hospital. He was instrumental in obtaining several Texas Historical Markers in the city and received the State Historical Commission's Outstanding
Volunteer Award in 1994. He also served chairmanships in the Greater Texas City La Marque Chamber of Commerce, Texas City Lions Club and work with the Boy Scouts of America. He was honored by the Texas City Rotary Club with its Vocational Service Award and
as a Paul Harris Fellow. He is co-author of the city sponsored book, Texas City Images of the Twentieth Century. . He continued his Christian work in Prescott as a lay minister at Las Fuentes Retirement Resort. He actively attended Prescott United Methodist
Church until his death.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 72 years, Muriel Tyerman Campbell.
He is survived by a son, Colin and daughter-in-law, Linda Campbell of Prescott, Arizona and Punto Chivato, Mexico; a daughter Karen and son-in-law Richard Denney of Prescott, Arizona; five grandchildren, Kemberlee Campbell, Christopher Campbell, Jennifer Campbell
of Prescott, Arizona. Victor Carsrud of Austin, Texas, Corey Wakeley of Pasco, Washington; step-grandchildren, Erin Denney-Koelsch of Rochester, N.Y., Bryce Denney of Marlborough, Mass.; thirteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
