George Barron Rush Sr.
1929 - 2017

George Barron Rush Sr., known as “GB" to many, returned to his heavenly home on April 22, 2017, passing unexpectedly but peacefully, in El Paso, Texas, at the age of 87. George is survived by his wife, Elva Conde of Houston, Texas; and his son, George Barron Rush Jr. of The Woodlands, Texas. He is also survived by grandchildren Gerod & Amber Rush and their children, Brinley & Macie Rush of The Woodlands, Texas; Andrea Rush of The Woodlands, Texas; Nicholas & DMietress Myers and their children, Morgan & Mason Myers, of Lampasas, Texas; Melissa Myers of Harker Heights, Texas and her children, Aaron Herring of New Braunfels, Texas, and Trevor, Elijah & Cassidey Dotson of Sugar Land, Texas. He is preceded in death by his first wife JoAnn Ford Rush of Herrin, Illinois; his daughter, Rosemarie Rush of Houston, Texas; his father Dr. Rufus Rush of San Marcos, Texas; his mother, Marie Rush of San Marcos, Texas; his brother, Rufus Rush of San Marcos Texas; his sister Martha Jane Rush of San Marcos, Texas; additionally his second wife, Dorothy Parrish Rush, of Port Neches, Texas.

George was born on October 14, 1929 in San Marcos, Texas to Dr. Rufus and Marie Rush. While George attended San Marcos High School, he played football, became an Eagle Scout and played trombone for the Swing Kings. Upon high school graduation, he received a letter of appointment to West Point from Lyndon B. Johnson, to play football. After only a year at West Point, George broke his jaw during a game and transferred to the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. At Texas A&M University, he embraced tradition to the fullest extent by trying out and being elected to the Infamous Aggie Yell Leaders. He would go on to serve as the Head Yell Leader from 1950 through 1953. Before graduating with a degree in Architectural Construction in 1953, he married the love of his life, JoAnn Ford, in 1951.

In 1953, George and JoAnn moved to the Houston area and started a family and a business. George Barron Rush Jr. was born in 1953, Rosemarie Rush was born in 1956 and Barron Builders was founded in 1958. George was very successful in the construction business from 1958 to 1972. At that time, he was also involved with the Masons and the Kiwanis. Additionally, he became a Shriner Legion of Honor.

In 1972, George had a near-death experience, while having a pulmonary embolism. During that time he stated that, “he experienced the greatest kind of love he could ever imagine. It was so great a love that he didn’t want to come back.” This ultimately led George to find Jesus, at which time he left the construction world, to go to Southwest Baptist Seminary in Ft. Worth, where he received his Master’s degree. After Seminary, he worked as a Pastor at Bluffdale Baptist Church for four years. In 1978, he resurrected his old company Barron Builders, and transitioned it to Barron Builders & Management Company, Inc., whereby he started holding prayer meetings and church gatherings, with employees and residents of the apartment complexes he built and managed. He also used this time as a springboard to found Multifamily Mission Ministries in 1982. With the assistance of his son, Barron, they developed countless apartment complexes and became one of the largest management companies for affordable housing, specializing in care for the elderly. During his “spare” time, George was a Chaplin for the Pasadena police department and was involved in various prison ministries around Texas.

George retired for the first time in 1996 and moved back to San Marcos to live on the River and enjoy time with his family. He also went to countless Texas A&M football games, as a season ticket holder for decades. He and JoAnn enjoyed traveling in their RV until she passed away in 2000, at which time he came out of retirement to focus on his ministries with Mutifamily Mission Ministries, taking on an active role as Chairman of the Board. In 2005, George happened upon JoAnn’s best friend, Dorothy Parrish, at the grocery store, and as life would have it, they fell in love and married in 2006. He and Dorothy lived at times in New Orleans, Louisiana, where they helped redevelop apartments that were destroyed during Katrina. Sadly, George’s daughter, Rosemarie, passed away unexpectedly in 2014. Shortly after, he and Dorothy moved into The Rosemont Assisted Living Facility, in Kingwood, Texas. This facility was built and owned by his son Barron and managed by his grandson, Gerod. In early 2016, Dorothy passed away. Later in 2016, George married Elva Conde, his long-time caregiver, in Las Vegas. In 2017 they would travel the country for a month, enjoying good music, great company, and adventure, ending up again in Las Vegas. It was on the way home from that trip where George began to fall ill.

George Rush loved life and lived it to the fullest. He believed in hard work and dedication to family. Most importantly, he believed in Jesus, and he let that be known to anyone who had the honor of meeting him. As such, he impacted countless lives and was loved by all. George was a notorious Aggie and he “Fought ‘em Fair” to the very end. Please join us while we celebrate his life, this Sunday, April 30, 2017.

George Rush will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Funeral Home & Cemetery on Sunday, April, 30, 2017. A viewing will begin at 10:30, with a funeral scheduled for 11:30. The burial and reception will immediately follow. Ron Smith will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate George's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Shriner’s Hospitals for Children at 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607 or they can be made
