Retired Lt. Col. Max M. Kirby, a great man of integrity and compassion, loved dearly by family and friends, passed away two days before his 97th birthday. Born in Pampa, Texas on March 25, 1920, he graduated from Texas A&M University in 1941, following his brother, Selmer Kirby, class of 1937, who played on the Aggie football team. Max was the only senior that could not afford to buy his senior boots and told stories of how many students hitch hiked their way home for the holidays, lining up at the front of the campus. Max served in the Army’s Field Artillery division in Okinawa, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. After service in the Army, Max had a long and successful career with Shell Chemical Company, transferring with them from New York, to California, and on to the Houston office in 1978 where he retired and lived the rest of his life with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Greta Kirby; son, Millard Kirby (ROTC class of 1982); daughter, Debbie Richter (class of 1986); son-in-law, Scott Richter and granddaughter, Erika Richter.

Max will be forever missed, admired for his clear and clever mind, kindness, honesty, and dedication to his family and friends, who will never forget him and what he has shared with each of them.
