Colonel Gene Arnold Miller, age 82, passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 surrounded by his family.
Mr. Miller was born on August 5, 1934 in Marlin, TX, son of the late Paul August and Alexa Lenora Miller.
After graduating from Texas A&M as well as Michigan State, Mr. Miller proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and retired as a Comptroller after 25 dedicated years. He fought for his county in the Vietnam Air Offensive and Vietnam Air\Ground Campaigns and helped serve his country in Panama, Costa Rica, Bolivia, British Guiana, Columbia, Peru, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua and Ethiopia. He obtained over 5,900 flying hours as a pilot including over 400 tactical airlift combat hours in a C-130 B. He also piloted an “Expeditor”, a “Hercules”, and the “Gooney Bird,” just to name a few. He was a decorated retired veteran earning the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal and an Air Force Outstanding Unit Award including one for Valor.
After his retirement from the Air Force, he later worked for United Way of Houston County as the Executive Director until it became the United Way of Central Georgia where he served as an Account Executive until his retirement after eighteen and a half years of dedicated employment.
Mr. Miller is a past member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Warner Robbins, GA and a member of their Hope Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the Warner Robins Rotary Club, Will Watt and Paul Harris Fellow, 31 years in the Warner Robbins Noon Optimist Club where he served as Secretary Treasurer and received the Optimist of the Year award in 1986 and 2005. He served as a member of the Middle Georgia Chapter American Society Military Comptrollers Hall of Fame. He was a Life Member of the Air Force Association, Military Officers Association of America and the Reserve Officer’s Association.
Mr. Miller is preceded in death by his brother, Clyde James Miller; brother-in-law Frank Reue.
Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Carolyn Reese Miller; daughter, Sherry (Mike) Abernathy of Adairsville, GA; grandchildren, John Andrew (Amber) Abernathy and Cliff Alexander Abernathy, Amber Nicole Golyer; great-grandchildren, Alexa Elizabeth Buttacavoli, Brayden Lee Golyer, Dylan Lee Goyler, Emilia Ann Golyer, Gavin Michael Tatum, Olivia Reese Abernathy, and John Rhett Abernathy; sister, Lavonne Reue; brother-in-law, Robert (Ginni) Reese; several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at eleven-thirty in the morning on Tuesday, the 28th of March, 2017 in the chapel of Owen Funeral Home with Rev. Skip Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow at one-thirty in the afternoon at the Georgia National Cemetery with full military honors presented.
