He also went to Germany in 1950 as a foreign exchange student and graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor Degree in Agricultural Economics. He then served two years as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army before he returned to Kansas State to complete his Master Degree in Agricultural Economics in 1957.

Doc married Luanne Hicks from Western Kansas on May 28, 1956 before studying at Oklahoma State for a year. As a part of an U.S. Aid Project, Doc worked in Ethiopia, Africa, teaching Agricultural Economics at the Imperial Ethiopia College for two and half years. In January of 1962, Doc and Luanne moved to Bryan/College Station where he attended Texas A&M University, graduating in 1966 with a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics.
