Jack Harvey Harris

Jack Harvey Harris, 85, passed away on Monday, March 13, 2017 in Pearland. Jack was born on December 12, 1931 in Houston, TX to parents Frank and Marguerite (Curry) Harris. He proudly served his country as Captain in the United States Air Force from 1953-1961. He attended several Universities from 1953 to 1966 and obtained his degree in Master of Science, Doctor of Dental Surgery, and a Bachelor of Arts. He was a proud Texas A&M Aggie, Class of 1953. Jack shared his knowledge with others as an assistant and associate professor of periodontics for UTMB of Houston (1962-1995) and on the advisory board of health law and policy institute at the University of Houston-School of Law. He utilized his education and built a successful private practice of dentistry and periodontics from 1961-1991. He held many positions for organizations such as the Houston District Dental Society, President of the Texas Dental Association, President of the American Dental Association, and FDI World Dental Federation. His many accomplishments throughout his life also included County Commissioner in Brazoria County (1997-2008), and Texas State Representative (1985-1996). Jack held positions on political committees such as higher education, natural resources, environmental affairs and state, federal and international relations, as well as special committees for teenage drug abuse, health care task force and natural resource conservation. His extensive involvement and the positions he held were very beneficial to the success of his many publications and oral presentations. He published many articles in the Houston District Dental Journal, Texas Dental Journal and Journal of the American Dental Association. Many of his oral presentations were held in Washington D.C., conferences, and universities and schools around the world, including England, Hungary and Ireland. The honors he received throughout his life were many. His devotion to his career and his family were well shown and he will be missed dearly by all that knew him.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Marguerite Harris; sister, Mildred Smith; brother in laws, B.M. Smith and Lyle Pulleyn.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Mary Ellen Harris; son, Rick Harris and wife Susan; sisters, Jean Pulleyn and Jane Shephard and husband David; grandson, Ryan Harris and wife Stephanie; granddaughter, Kathryn Harris Jones and husband Dustin; great granddaughter, Avery Madison Jones; numerous nieces, nephews and family members.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at First United Methodist Church in Pearland, 2314 N. Grand Blvd, Pearland, TX 77581.
