Barnard Goodman
(June 1, 1954 - October 19, 2016)

Barnard Thomas Goodman, of Friendswood, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, October 19, 2016, surrounded by family at St. John Hospital in Nassau Bay, Texas. Barney was born on June 1, 1954 in Houston, Texas and was the second child and first son of Barnard P. and Mary Annette Goodman. He was a resident of Friendswood for over 25 years.

Barney is survived by his wife of 42 years, Beverly Goodman of Friendswood; daughter Melanie Hébert and her husband Alan of Fairview, Texas; daughter Megan Goodman of Friendswood; parents Barnard and Mary Goodman of San Angelo, Texas; sister Marylee Johnson and her husband Sandy of Parker, Colorado; five grandchildren: Eleanor, Thomas, and Clara Hébert of Fairview and Cameron and Jaden Goodman of Friendswood. He was preceded in death by brothers David Goodman and Spencer Goodman.

Barney was a native Houstonian and graduate of Bellaire High School, where he was a proud Bird Keeper of the cardinal mascot. He went on to attend Texas A & M University in College Station, Texas, where he majored in Forestry and was a proud member of the Class of 1976. While attending college, he married his high school sweetheart, Beverly Jackson. After graduation, they moved to East Texas where Barney began working as a forester with Kirby Lumber Company, and they had two daughters. Later, he earned his MBA from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. The family moved to the Houston area when Barney accepted a job as an Assistant Controller at NCS. He ended his career as a Controller at W.M. Dewey & Son in Houston, retiring after 16 years of service, shortly before his death.

Barney was a man of varied interests and passions. He was a proud Aggie, always ready to be the “12th Man”, a member of the Century Club, and appreciated a good Aggie joke. He was a fervent lover of music and showed his love through action. He and his wife founded Texas Nights Concerts, a house concert series where they hosted over 100 concerts featuring Texas singer/songwriters. He also assisted with the production of and occasionally guest-hosted “Lone Star Jukebox” on KPFT FM radio. He was an avid and lifelong fisherman, even building custom rods for himself, family, and friends.

Barney was a Christian, a faithful and devoted husband, a loving and supportive father, a fun-loving and caring grandfather, a steadfast and dedicated uncle, a loyal and reliable friend, a hardworking and committed employee, and the life of the party for those who knew him well.

Barney always said that when he passed away, he wanted a party because he knew where he was going, and it should be a time of celebration, not sadness. A Celebration of Life in Barney’s honor will be held on Saturday, October 29, beginning at 2:00 at Scott Funeral Home in Alvin and continuing with a reception and time of fellowship at the Green Event Center in Friendswood.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Water Mission or The Himalayan Cataract Project. The family of Barney Goodman wishes to express appreciation to Dr. Sausan Abouharb, the doctors and staff of MD Anderson in the Bay Area, and the caring nurses and staff at St. John ICU.
