Harry Atwood Standley, Jr.
August 16, 1936 - March 4, 2017

Harry Atwood Standley, Jr. slipped the surly bonds of earth and went Home to be with the Lord on March 4, 2017. He endured a short but intense illness with grace and courage. Harry was born in Madisonville, Texas to H. Atwood and Margaret Byers Standley. He was proud to be an Aggie, attending Texas A&M College, member of the Corp of Cadets, Squadron 6, graduating 1957. He served in the Air Force for 5 years as a meteorologist, being too long-legged to fly a fighter plane. He was a student of WWII. His heroes were Generals George Patton and Douglas MacArthur. MacArthur’s “Farewell to West Point” was a favorite speech. After his military service, he spent his working career with American General Investment Corporation in Houston, Texas.

Harry’s gift was Servanthood. He spent many years volunteering with the United Way, where he met some guys he stayed friends with over the years. They remembered him as getting to the office and arranging lunch for the day before beginning work. After moving to Katy in 1993 he went through an illness from which he should not have survived. That made a big change in his life and when he saw a new church being started in Katy, Grace Fellowship; he went to the first service in 1996 and missed very few Sundays after that enjoying greeting, ushering, and serving on various leadership committees. He felt that he’d been given extra years to be with his family and be part of the growth of Grace Fellowship. His handiwork is still all around the campus.

Harry is survived by his bride of 52+ years, Brandee (Alice) Chamberlain Standley, Son H. Atwood Standley III and wife, Kendra, our daughter-in-love, their three gifts to him: Lily, Harry IV and Marly. Also, brother-in-law Alan Chamberlain and wife, Denise, and their family.

A memorial service will be held on March 13, 2017 at 11:00am, Grace Fellowship UMC, 2655 S. Mason Road, Katy 77450. A light lunch will be served afterward at the church narthex. A family burial will be later in the year.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Grace Fellowship ministry of your choice at above address or Texas A&M Association of Former Students, 505 George Bush Dr., College Station, TX 77840.
