Alton Fowler Hopkins Jr.(1933 - 2017)
HOPKINS, JR., Alton Fowler Alton Fowler Hopkins, Jr., began a new chapter of his life on February 15, 2017, as he entered Heaven to worship Jesus Christ for eternity. A loving husband, father, veterinarian and community leader, he was known by his friends as "Dr. Al the Puppies' Pal." Born in Dallas to Susan and "Hop" Hopkins on July 7, 1933, Al attended Hillcrest High School and Texas A&M University where he completed his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1956. He was co-owner of, and practiced at, Highland Park Animal Clinic and Lakewood Animal Clinic over a span of 50 years. A leader in any endeavor, Al served as president of both the Texas Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association and sat on the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. Al was an avid hunter, fisherman, pilot, skier and golfer. He was a lifelong Methodist and used his gift of leadership to serve in many capacities at Ridgewood Park UMC and University Park UMC. He also served as president of Royal Oaks Country Club, a place where everyone knew his name. In 2015, the Hopkins Senior Cup Golf Tournament was established in his honor. If not enjoying the outdoors in Texas, Al was most at home in Lake City, Colorado, where his parents instilled a love for the mountains through their boys' camp, Ute Trail. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Bobbie Anne Trott Hopkins; his children, Jan Hopkins Hankinson and husband Rob; Larry Hopkins and wife Leslie; Susan Hopkins Atchison and husband Craig, along with sister Nancy Hopkins Ferguson and husband Stan and seven beloved grandchildren: Jenny Hankinson Smiley and husband Taylor; Katie Hankinson Schell and husband Eric; Garland Hopkins Sepulveda and husband Matthew; Lawson Hopkins and wife Rachel; Evann Hopkins; Caroline Atchison and Kyle Atchison. Much to his delight, he was also the proud great grandfather to Clara Kate Smiley. Just as significant to Al were his caregivers truly sent from heaven above Paulina Chapman, Sally Cabuco, Brandon Chapman and Sheila Mathis, as well as Paula Chapman, a surrogate granddaughter to him. A memorial service celebrating Al's life will be held on Monday, February 20, 2017 at 2pm at University Park United Methodist Church.
