James Edwin Livingston was born on September 4, 1938 to James and Ethel Livingston in Lovelady, Texas and in the community of Smith Grove. James was the eldest of five children. James completed his high school education at Center Grove High School, Lovelady Texas. He continued his studies earning his Bachelor’s Degree at Prairie View A&M and continued on at Texas A&M where he earned his Master’s Degree in Urban Planning. He served for two years as a county extension agent for Shelby County, Texas. He went on to work for the Department of Housing and Urban Development and retired from his position there after 31 years of service.

On June 12, 1965 he married the love of his life, Hattie L. Jackson. To this union were born two sons, James Stephen and Edwin Uel. James loved his wife and children immensely and always took an opportunity to brag about their accomplishments. And most likely wherever you saw James, you would also see Hattie. He loved spending time with Hattie.

After retiring from HUD, James and Hattie moved back to Lovelady, Texas where James went to work with The Smith Grove Church of Christ. He was a faithful elder overseeing many projects and needs of The Smith Grove Church of Christ . He was a faithful elder until his health failed. He also served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged from service. James loved to talk about his various travels while working for HUD. He was able to see many different parts of the country; he always loved the New Mexico area. And he was always willing to discuss his upcoming plans for his garden. He would eagerly and with much enthusiasm share his gardening wisdom with anyone who would engage him in conversation on the subject.

James leaves to cherish his memories and love, a faithful and devoted wife, Hattie Livingston of 51 years. He also leaves behind his son, James “Stephen” Livingston and wife Candy Livingston of Rockwall, Texas as well as son, Edwin Livingston and his wife Katja Livingston of Los Angeles, California. James had three grandchildren of whom he was quite proud of and never missed an opportunity to make that known; Jordan Alexander and Madison Kate of Rockwall, Texas as well as Imani Grace of Phoenix, Arizona. He also leaves behind two sisters, Shirley Livingston of Houston, Texas and Bettye Jo Cotton of Huntsville, Texas. He leaves two brothers, Charles “Wes” Livingston (Wanda) of Victoria, Texas and Wilburn Livingston of Houston, Texas. Other family members include his aunt Pauline Fisher of Houston, Texas as well as his Uncle Hulon Sheppard of Houston, Texas as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, James and Ethel Livingston.
