Mary Elizabeth Adamek


Mary Elizabeth (McCall) Adamek was a wife, mother, daughter, sister, granddaughter, aunt, niece, friend, teacher and native Houstonian. She was born, August 13th, 1980 at St Luke’s Hospital in the Texas Medical Center on a hot summer morning and she died peacefully at MD Anderson Cancer Center on Thanksgiving morning, November 24th, 2016 with her husband Steve and sister Amanda at her side. She was 36 years old.

Mary was preceded in death by her Grandmother Lorraine Shumer and her "Papa" Kenneth H. McCall. She is survived by her husband, Steve Adamek and their 8-year old twins, Allison and Mitchell. Her parents Kenneth T. & Sherrie McCall of Hempstead, her Brother Eric McCall and Wife Jena, of Kingsland, GA, her Sister Amanda McCumber and Husband Tim of Cypress, and Brother Kenneth E. (“Eddie”) McCall and wife Victoria of Weatherford, & Nephews Nathan and Eric McCall, Daniel McCumber, Nolan McCall and Niece Samantha McCall, her "Granny" Marie McCall of Houston and her Grandfather Edwin Shumer of Renton, Washington.

Mary was the youngest child of Kenneth and Sherrie McCall. At a very young age she displayed three distinct talents. She had an irresistible smile; her Papa always greeted her with “Hello Smiley”. She knew how to lead a conversation and she was always a little Bossy, which would get her into big trouble with her 2 older brothers and older sister. Her Auntie Gladys, would come to visit once a year, upon returning to Seattle, she would tattle to Mary’s grandmother, “That Mary sure bosses "Eddie" around”.

She was raised in the same house that her parents lived in for 23 years on Hanning Lane. She attended Cy-Fair Schools from kindergarten until she graduated Cy-Falls High School in 1998. While growing up the family didn’t have many material possessions, but their home was filled with love and they could count on each other for strength. Mary was a great student, made good grades, and was always very organized.

One thing was for certain in the McCall household, you were going to play baseball and Mary was no exception. She was the star of her co-ed T-ball team, co-ed in the sense that there was ONE girl, Mary. She ran circles around the boys, and was the best athlete on the team. She played Softball through High School, and once told somebody when she was little that she had to be a good ball player, because in her family, everyone was a good baseball player. She also played basketball in Junior High & a bit in High School.

After graduating high school, Mary was lead to Abilene Christian University on a Softball Scholarship, but later transferred to Texas A&M University where she met her future husband Steve Adamek. As a Kid, Mary wanted to be a Bus Driver. Funny thing is that Steve was 1 of 300 Texas A&M Student Shuttle Bus Drivers for the University.

Mary & Steve graduated from Texas A&M and later got her Master’s in Education from Sam Houston State University in 2008. She did this while pregnant with twins & still working Full Time. Mary started her Teaching Career at Truitt Middle School teaching English, then Science which was to become her Passion. Truitt Middle School was her Alma Matter. Mary taught alongside many of the Same Teachers that once Taught her. She later taught Science for 3 years at Sam Rayburn Middle School in Bryan, TX, but the Adamek Family later returned to Cy-Fair in 2012, where She taught at Goodson Middle School. She was a very popular teacher, standing outside her doorway to greet her kids with high fives. Teaching Science was her life’s Passion, and it brought her a tremendous amount of Pride. She genuinely loved her students and always shared Wonderful stories about them. One her favorite things was running into a former student. So many of them told her how much she had impacted their lives. Her legacy Lives on through all of her Students, many that stayed in touch with her as they progressed in Life.

The Part of Life that she took the Most Pride in was her family. Her husband Steve & her “Mini-Me’s” Mitchell and Allison. Steve took great care of Mary through her battles with Leukeimia, and Complications after her Stem Cell Transplant. He was so inspirational with his devotion being Mary's 24/7 Caregiver. Though he won’t take any credit, please know that your family is proud of everything you did for Mary.
