John P. Davis
August 30, 1927 - February 02, 2017

Longtime Shreveport resident John Peter Davis, Jr. passed away in the early morning hours of Thursday, February 2, 2017. He was 89 years of age.

John graduated from C.E. Byrd High School and entered the Navy during WWII. While in military service he attended school at the University of Oklahoma in the engineering program and upon his discharge he enrolled in Texas A&M graduating in 1953 with a degree in Veterinary Medicine. During his time at A&M he received multiple Awards. After graduation he began his practice in Jacksonville, Florida. He returned to Texas A&M to teach and became the first graduate to obtain a Masters in Veterinary Surgery. While obtaining his masters he did ground breaking research in human heart transplant surgery alongside with the pioneers in this field.

He returned to Shreveport in 1956 and practiced Veterinary Medicine for 60 years. Upon retiring at age 86 he was the oldest practicing Veterinarian in the state of Louisiana.

Dr. Davis had a passion for education. While busy with a full time practice he obtained degrees from LSUS in finance and completed the MBA program. He also served on the LSU Baton Rouge board of Regents for many years.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Josephine Sterle Davis and John Peter Davis, Sr.; and his son, John Peter Davis, III. He is survived by his son, Dr. Paul Michael Davis (Janet), daughter, Dorothy Elizabeth Allen; grandchildren, Elissa Ann Davis Nava (Mark), Zachary Camille Davis, Paul Michael Davis, Jr., Stephen Orr Davis and William Joseph Davis; siblings, Helen Davis Wilson, JoAnn Davis Lechman and Thomas Philip Davis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial mass celebrating his life will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Officiating will be Fr. Mark Franklin with Concelebrant, Fr. Charles Glorioso. The family will receive friends at 10:30 a.m. prior to the service.

Throughout Dr. Davis’ life his work was his passion but stronger still was his desire to guide and care for his children and grandchildren.
