Dr. Larry Jack Stout
October 15, 1946 - January 16, 2017

Dr. Larry Jack Stout, beloved brother, uncle, researcher, and lifelong educator went to be with the Lord on the morning of January 16th in Thibodaux, Louisiana. He was 70 years old.
Born October 15, 1946, in San Angelo, Texas, Larry grew up the third of four rambunctious brothers all of whom remained close throughout his life. Larry’s mother always promoted reading and education with her sons. None took this more to heart than Larry. An avid reader, Larry always encouraged those around him to continue learning. His annual Christmas gifts to nieces and nephews was always a book chosen just for them, either because he knew they would enjoy it or because it aptly applied to that phase of their lives. Loved by his extended family, Larry always made time to visit San Angelo during Christmas and summer breaks. His antics, wit and love will be sorely missed by his family.
After graduating from San Angelo Central High School in 1965, he attended college at Texas A&M where he earned a B.S. in Psychology in 1969. Larry loved the Aggies and was always grateful to the Texas A&M Mothers Club whose scholarship afforded him the opportunity for a great education. He earned a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Houston in 1977, while working three jobs!
Larry was a long-time faculty member at Nicholls State University. A licensed psychologist, Larry joined the Nicholls College of Education faculty in 1988 as an assistant professor of psychology and was promoted to associate professor in 1994. Last week, faculty and students held a memorial for Dr. Stout. One student said, “What I remember most about Dr. Stout were his Friday classes. Fridays were always a special occasion. ‘Coach’s Friday’ (as referred to by Larry) meant he wore his signature khaki shorts, whistle, and a loud Hawaiian shirt. The loudness of the Hawaiian shirt correlated with how well we had performed on our last test, the louder the better. Thank you, Dr. Stout for teaching us not to take life too seriously.”
A true academician, Larry was passionate about school psychology, technology and K-12 learning. He partnered with colleagues across Louisiana to initiate the Educational Leadership Technology concentration for school psychologists.
Always an advocate for the marginalized, Larry devoted much of his career to diagnosing and developing treatment plans for emotionally disturbed or autistic children. He published numerous papers on school psychology, math based interventions, student evaluations and student-teacher interactions.
Larry frequently donated his own financial resources to send students to professional conferences or to help others in need. He was always quick to laugh and joke with his co-workers and students. His 30 years at Nicholls State University left a large footprint, one that will not soon be forgotten.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents Mattibel and Jesse Stout of San Angelo, TX. Survivors include Brigitte and Jesse R. Stout of San Angelo, Bill Stout of Stonewall, TX and Julia and Randy Stout of San Angelo, nephew William Stout (Ashley of Midlothian, TX, niece Vanessa Stout of Houston, nephew Randy Stout of San Angelo, nephew Hank Stout (Marit) of Houston, and niece Angela Curley (Adam) of Houston, great nephews and nieces Tyler and Jessica Stout of Midlothian, and Rufus Henry and Annie Laurie Stout of Houston.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 27th, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorials be sent to local Texas A&M Mothers Club, Treasurer, P.O. Box 62314, San Angelo, Texas 76906.
