O. E. "Skip" Johnson
August 3, 1930 - January 21, 2017

Faith in Jesus Christ guided Skip Johnson '52 through life, and his love for others helped to give his journey meaning.

A native Texan, Skip delivered newspapers and worked in the paper’s office throughout his junior and senior high school years in order to save enough money to pay for his first two years of college. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur, Skip attended Texas A&M University. He was a member of the Corps of Cadets, was intramural boxing champion throughout his college career and he received a ROTC contract that paid for his final two years at Texas A&M.

During the summer of his senior year Skip met the love of his life, Jean Putnam. After he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering, the two married and then followed his 28-year career with Gulf Oil Corporation, which took them to Texas, California, Virginia, Louisiana, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Spain, and the Netherlands.
Skip was active in his church, played tennis, taught drivers safety courses for AARP, and as a member of Gideons International, he loved giving free copies of the Bible to anyone who wanted one.

Generosity was a hallmark of Skip’s character, and although he shied away from the spotlight, he and Jean were recognized for their support of Texas A&M students with the Carolyn S. Lohman Advocacy Leadership Award from the College of Education and Human Development, being named an Honorary Maroon Coat by the Texas A&M Foundation and with membership in the Texas A&M Foundation’s Legacy Society.

Skip was equally comfortable in formal wear moving Jean across the dance floor, or sporting game-day attire yelling for his beloved Aggies. His quick-wit, great sense of humor and genuine compassion drew people to him, ensuring that he never met a stranger, and almost always made a friend.

Skip and Jean were married for 64 years and have three adult children: Robert '83, Jim and Gay. They have three grandchildren: Vicky Prugar, Robin Johnson and Amanda Johnson; and two great-grandchildren: Jeannie Prugar and James Prugar. He also has a brother, Bob Johnson. Other family include Robert and Jimmie Putnam, Barbara Greenstreet, Beth and Kyle Davis, Bradley and Jinks Greenstreet and Kyle and Margaret Greenstreet.

Skip leaves behind a legacy of faithfulness to the Lord, his family, friends, university and community.

Please join the family in celebrating Skip’s life at 11 AM on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Bryan.

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.
2 Timothy 4:7 (King James Bible)
