Emerson Mitchel Connell, Jr., 96, went to be with our Lord, January 15, 2017.

Born on March 30, 1920, in Dallas, Texas and the oldest of four children, Emerson spent his youth in College Station. He attended Texas A&M University, majoring in Chemical Engineering, Class of 1942. With the onset of World War II, he was commissioned into the U.S. Army Air Force, serving honorably as a Major in France and England until February 1946.

After the war, Emerson settled in Dallas, where he met his wife of 70 years, Eleanor Gish. After a brief courtship of less than 100 days, they were engaged and married. They had three children, Donald Connell of Llano, Texas, Thomas Connell of Sealy, Texas, and Nancy Connell Bourell of Austin, Texas.
Emerson came to know our Lord Jesus Christ as a youth and served his entire life as a witness and role model of the faith. He was for most of his adult life a member at Tyler Street United Methodist Church in Dallas, and was proud of his involvement in the Evangelism Explosion movement. Upon retirement, he and his wife relocated to Austin where they were members of First United Methodist Church and of Manchaca United Methodist Church. Emerson participated for many years in the Walk to Emmaus movement. He was active in Boy Scouts, serving as scoutmaster. He was a talented furniture maker, producing exquisite pieces for his family, church, and friends. Emerson was a long-time philatelist, collecting stamps for over 50 years. He was an avid reader and loved working jigsaw puzzles.

Emerson is survived by his wife, 3 children, 9 grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, January 18, 2017, at 1:00 P.M., at Manchaca United Methodist Church, 1011 FM 1626, Manchaca, Texas, with a reception following. Memorials may be directed to Manchaca United Methodist Church.
