FREDERICK FRANCIS NYC III
August 10, 1930 ~ December 29, 2016 (age 86)

Frederick F. Nyc III left this world on December 29, 2016. He joins his wife of 51 years, Betty, his daughter Lee Ann and granddaughter Eileen as well as other loved ones now in God’s embrace. Fred was born August 10, 1930 in Sulphur Springs, TX to Fred Nyc Jr and Willie Dyer Claiborne Nyc. Growing up, Fred traveled Texas where his father’s job took the family. In high school, he met his future wife, “the girl next door”, Betty Louise Harrison. After college at TAMU, Fred married Betty and joined the USAF. They raised four children, Billie Louise, Edgar Louis, Frederick IV and Lee Ann. His career in the USAF took the family to many places in the US and abroad. Along the way Fred acquired a MA in Business Administration. One of Fred’s last tours took the family to Okinawa and him to fly in Vietnam. His book “Blind Bat” is a cathartic telling of his tour flying C-130s in the Vietnam War. Fred retired from the USAF after more than two decades of service and he moved the family to property in Bastrop County. He launched several new careers administrating hospitals in Smithville and Elgin and MD Anderson Cancer Research facility in Bastrop County. When Fred retired from those endeavors he cultivated Christmas trees as Loma Alta Christmas Tree Farm. Family and friends worked the farm for many seasons until the Bastrop Complex fire of 2011 destroyed the farm and 3 homes on the property. Fred leaves many to mourn his passing. He was known as Poppy to his 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Fred survived a battle with cancer only to have Alzheimer’s step in and snatch his memories. His lifelong friends have been so very kind during this last part of his journey through life. Fred had a long, good, busy, fulfilling, and loving life and we will celebrate it on January 10, 2017 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Smithville, TX at 10:00 am. A reception will be held in the Parish Hall following the memorial mass. Many thanks to the kind folks at Towers Nursing Home, Brackenridge Hospital and Hospice Austin.
