March 22, 1936 - November 2, 2016
Nan found great joy and satisfaction in making a house a home. Every home she graced was full of color, warmth and family. She loved furniture and room design as a small girl decorating (and re-decorating with floor and wallpaper samples) the doll house her parents made for her – complete with 10 rooms and working electric switch lights. She brought that love of home to her business she established and enjoyed in McAllen Texas. Design Alternative was much more than a cabinetry and kitchen design store; it was a door to client’s homes. She used her innate sense of design and warm friendliness to re-create new and fresh looks for her clients, all of whom became close friends for life. She often commented that her gift to the world was making a sense of home and belonging through home design one house at a time.
She was born on March 22, 1936 in Raymondville, a small south Texas town. She attended the small public schools and was active as a band leader and enthusiastic in school programs. During summer months, her parents vacated to Port Mansfield in search of cool Gulf breezes in the years prior to air conditioning. It was these idyllic times she learned to love the Gulf and especially fishing. Whether from a pier or a glorious boat ride over choppy waves bound for the Cut, she was thrilled to be out on the water. This love of life on the water was with her throughout her time on this world.
She married her high school sweetheart and began her family. He was a military officer, so she travelled to many bases and stations across our country, including Alaska. She is survived by her three children, Karin, Cavitt and Kip. Many grandchildren and great grandchildren have added to her legacy.
Her great love of her life was Bob Cole, who preceded her in death. She and Bob met in McAllen Texas at a festive gathering. Neither of them almost did not attend the party thinking there would only be young kids at the affair. But they did attend and found each other almost immediately. After that party, they were rarely separated and married soon thereafter. Both of them lit up a room or the backyard patio of their Waterwalk home for several years. She was President of the Home Owners Association, a thankless job!
She was a student and she was a teacher. 1980 was the year she obtained her Ph.D. in Education from Texas A&M and taught classes on the College Station campus and later came back to her roots in South Texas to teach in public schools. Learning was sometimes a challenge, especially statistics, but one she embraced and expressed with her enthusiastic expressions of teaching others new ideas and skills.
She was active in P.E.O. an international women’s educational organization. She attended and organized many functions, including some with hundreds of attendees. She was her chapter President for two years and led the chapter to the highest level of fundraising recorded to this day.
Ah yes, the music in her life surrounded her. From an early age her mother Elaine instilled and drilled piano playing and love of singing. She was active in the Raymondville Methodist Church choir and continued singing in choirs her entire life. She often laughed that she was not the best alto, but everyone could sure hear her sing out loud to Jesus and the Lord God!
Nan made her final move in 2008 to Georgetown Texas and Sun City where she again became engaged and active in her community. She continued to work with home design for friends and clients and skillfully staged homes built by her sons Cavitt and Kip for the residential real estate market. She was surrounded by friends and family who loved and enjoyed her throughout these years. San Gabriel Presbyterian Church welcomed her leadership in 2014 when she was ordained and installed as both a Saint Stephen’s Minister and a Church Deacon. Hers was a joyful light who touched many in large and small ways. Nan Crowell Cole met her Father in Heaven on the morning of November 2, 2016.
