Mays was born on November 8, 1923 to Temple and Allene (Mays) Fuqua in Justin, Texas. After graduating from Rhome High School, he attended the A&M College of Texas (now Texas A&M) but World War II intervened. Mays entered combat with the 75th Infantry Division in Belgium, December 1944 which become known as The Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded a Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Infantryman Badge.

After Mays’ WWII service, he resumed his studies at Texas A&M. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Education and was united in marriage to Billie Moore, both on May 30, 1947 in College Station. Mays then taught high school vocational agriculture for 30+ years and retired as Assistant Superintendent at Northwest High School. During that span, Mays earned his Master’s Degree and a counseling certificate from Texas A&M. A second career in manufacturing purchasing rounded out his working life.

Mays and Billie traveled, enjoyed children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, participating in many civic activities and volunteer organizations. Mays and Billie were long time Aggie supporters and attended decades of football games. Throughout his life, Mays focused on helping others and making friends out of strangers.

He was a member of the Rhome Church of Christ and served as an Elder for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 69 years, Billie Fuqua of Decatur; his sons, Ron Fuqua and wife Jan, Leon Fuqua and wife Jan; his daughter, Suzanne Long; his grandchildren, Tiffany Box and husband Daryl, Chris Fuqua and wife Amanda, Kevin Fuqua , Molly and Bailey Long, Christy Cartwright , Rob Cartwright and wife Sara; 10 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Geneva Bratton and Mary Helen Gadberry; 2 brothers, H.T. The family would especially like to extend sincere love and thanks to all the caregivers who attended to Mays physical needs for almost seven years. Likewise, all of the physical and occupational therapists at Fit-N-Wise deserve special mention for their devotion to Mays. Thank you all.
