Augusta Meredith Fox
July 30, 1930 - October 27, 2016
Augusta (Gus) Fox was born in Lewisville, Texas on July 30, 1930 as the only child of Nancy and Henry Fox. Gus also had three step-brothers and five step-sisters. His father died when he was 12 years old and he moved to Dallas with his mother.
Gus graduated in 1948 from Sunset High School in Dallas and then attended Texas A&M where he participated in ROTC.
He married Nancy Virginia Campbell Fox, his high school sweetheart, on August 3, 1951 and graduated the following year with a Bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1952 and then a Master's in Education in 1953. He served two years in the Army at Fort Devens, Massachusetts as a cryptologist during the Korean War and received a National Defense Service Medal. He then returned to Dallas and taught high school at S.S. Connor Junior High (1955 - 58) and Bryan Adams High School (1958 - 1962) in Dallas, Texas. He received his doctorate in Education from North Texas State College in 1961. From 1962 - 1968 he was an associate professor at Sam Houston State Teacher's College in Huntsville, Texas. He moved his family to Greeley, Colorado in 1968 and worked for 18 years as a professor and member of the Bureau of Research at Colorado State College, which later became the University of Northern Colorado. He retired and moved to Denver where he took up a second profession as a stockbroker, one of his life-long passions. Gus and Nancy lived in the Denver area for twenty years, with the last nine at Windcrest community in Highlands Ranch.
Gus will be remembered as someone who was gentle, loving, and kind to everyone around him. He was a great listener and always willing to lend a hand. He loved statistics and math and enjoyed mentoring his students. He was active with his children, helping them with home-work and home projects as they grew older. He was very sentimental and wrote many poems to his wife and for his children and grandchildren. Gus was an avid ham radio operator (call letters were W0MAI and W0EE) and loved gardening with Nancy. He was a devoted Texas A&M fan and enjoyed getting together with his classmates. Gus and Nancy were world travelers, visiting 122 countries, all 50 States, The District of Columbia and all 7 continents. He enjoyed studying investments and this passion helped fund their travels and save for retirement. About eight years ago, Gus developed dementia and then, two years ago, he moved to the memory care floor at Windcrest where he was well-loved by the residents and the staff due to his cheerful disposition and sense-of-humor.
Gus is survived by his wife, Nancy, who is living in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. His daughter, Jenny Worth, is currently living in Sharpsburg, Georgia with her husband Mike. Gus' grandson, Drew Worth, lives in Englewood, Colorado. Gus' son, John Fox, lives in San Diego, California with his wife, Mary, and their three children, Austin, Anna and Aaron Fox.
