Frank J. Stansfield Jr.

Frank J. Stansfield Jr. died on October 29th, 2016. He was born in Galveston, Texas on January 26th, 1926, the son of Frank and Lillian Stansfield.

Along life’s way he graduated from Ball High, Texas A&M University, and the University of Houston. Frank served in the infantry in two wars. In both, he was wounded within two months, sent to the hospital and never had to return to combat. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge with Star, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart with Cluster, and Service Ribbons with Stars for combat in Europe and Korea.

In 1956, Frank married Mary Elizabeth Tobias of Meridian, Mississippi and later moved to Dickinson, Texas. From that union came Frank (James) Stansfield III and Anne Stansfield McCormick. Mary preceded him in death in 1969.

In 1971, Frank and Verita (Vee) Melancon Shadle were married and she brought Renee, Chip, and Bobby into this union. Verita taught school in Clear Creek ISD and Frank taught in Dickinson ISD.

In retirement Verita and Frank were blessed with a long life. He volunteered in the HOST-CHAMPS program from its inception until his death. Both volunteered with the M.I. Lewis Service Center, the Galveston County Visitors Center, and the Galveston Opera House.

Frank greatly enjoyed Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, the Midrash discussion class at First Methodist Church, Dickinson, and “the old guys” who met at Wendy’s every Monday afternoon. He was a charter member of the latter. He was a loyal and active member of the Galveston A & M Club and the Clear Creek Association of Retired Teachers.

Frank is survived by his wife, Vee; sister, Jo Ann Stack; children, Anne (Dennis) McCormick, James Stansfield, Bob (Amy) Shadle, and Renee (Forrest) Dillon; grandchildren, John McCormick, Michael McCormick, Randy (Jamie) Stansfield, Rachel (Anthony) Wheeler, Robert Shadle, Amanda Shadle, Charlie Shadle, Shelby (Stephen) Cruse, and Sharlotte (Jonathan) Schumann; great grandchildren, Brynlee Stansfield, Hannah Shadle, Layton Shadle, Kade Cruse, Kyle Cruse, Kinley Cruse, Westin Schumann, and Harper Schumann.

It was his wish to be cremated and have his ashes buried in the family plot at the Galveston County Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock. A memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church on Highway 3 in Dickinson at 10:00 AM on Saturday, November 5th, with a reception to follow in Wolston Hall.
