John Claer Minter
April 24, 1932 - December 19, 2016

John Claer Minter went to be with his Savior December 19, 2016, in Austin TX. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Jan; daughter Terry and Dave Smetana; daughter Karen and Dave Maxwell; son John and Lindy Minter; 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and brother Charles and Allie Minter. His grandchildren are Stephanie and husband Todd Buckingham, Rachel Lanter, Josh Smetana, Jeremy Smetana, Anna Claire Minter, Luke Minter, and Molly Minter. His great grandchildren are Reid and Audrey Buckingham.

John was born April 24, 1932 at Brackenridge hospital in Austin to William Smith Minter and Edna Claer Minter. John graduated from Paschal High School in Fort Worth then Texas A&M in 1954 with a degree in Petroleum Engineering and was commissioned into the U.S. Army, finishing his military career as Captain. He was a proud member of the Corps of Cadets and had many funny and adventurous stories he loved to share from his time at A&M! His career as a consulting engineer took him to Midland, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Madagascar, Yemen and Dallas. He completed his career with Hunt Oil Company as Vice President of Engineering. He had a passion for the oil industry, for solving problems, and teaching others. As a subject matter expert, he was highly regarded for his unrelenting integrity, extraordinary intuition, and strong work ethic.

He was a leader in the Presbyterian Church and in the business world. He was an elder at Westminister Presbyterian Church in Midland, Canyon Creek Presbyterian Church in Richardson, First Presbyterian Church of Dallas, and First Presbyterian Church of Richardson. He also served as a Trustee of the Presbyterian Foundation in Dallas. John had a passion for helping others in the business world, the church, and in his personal life. He was a godly man and was known for his outstanding integrity and extravagant generosity. John loved his family, friends, and colleagues and was a mentor to many.

John was a member of the Jaycees of Midland, Texas and Director of the Soap Box Derby for two terms. He enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, scuba diving, camping, and spending time with his wife, Jan, and his family. John was a fan of Rudyard Kipling poems including “If,” “Gunga Din,” and “The Ballad of East and West,” reciting them from memory to his family. He is remembered by his children and grandchildren for putting them to bed quoting “Wynken, Blynken, and Nod,” by Eugene Field. His favorite scripture is 1 Corinthians 13. John was an avid fan of the Aggies and loved to sing the Aggie War Hymn with enthusiasm. He was committed to providing for his family and loved them unconditionally, always the encourager. To his friends, there was always a warm greeting and genuine interest. John loved to laugh!

The following scripture describes our beloved father, husband, son, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend:

How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in the path of sinners,
Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water,
Which yields its fruit in its season
And its leaf does not wither;
And in whatever he does, he prospers.
Psalm 1: 1-3

John’s life will be celebrated on January 14, 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 1835 Young St, Dallas, 75201, reception following.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Stewpot Ministry at First Presbyterian Church in Dallas or First Presbyterian Church in Richardson, 271 N. Walton St, Richardson, 75081.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7
