James Wilson Givens
January 27, 1938 - December 23, 2016

James Wilson Givens, born January 27, 1938, passed away on Friday, December 23, 2016. James is survived by his wife, Peggy Jo Givens; his sons, James Wilson Givens, Jr. and Jon Thomas Givens; sister, Ann Gross and her daughters, Jo Lynne Nelson and Deborah Sue Mathis; sister, Mary Frances McGhee and her daughter, Renee Denise Lenart; grandson, James Wilson (Tres) Givens III and his wife Jina, their son Peyton John Givens; and a new great grandson; niece and nephew, Shanley and Joseph Lenart; and nephews, Weston and Zachary Mathis.
James and Peggy dated two years before they married, and if there wasn’t a football game and it was duck season, James and Rogers Hoyt, Jr. went duck hunting.
James graduated from Texas A&M College on May 25, 1960 with a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering. James and Peggy married in the Katy Methodist Church on May 27, 1960. They lived in College Station, Texas for five years while he studied to earn both his M.S. Degree and his PhD. Degree. He taught undergraduate courses and won fellowships.
They moved to Ponca City, Oklahoma for three years, then James and Peggy moved to Katy in 1968, where they enjoyed old friends and new friends Square Dancing and Country Western Dancing. James also loved dogs and bird hunting. He somehow got Peggy to train his dogs for him. In the early 1980s, he took up Field Training. He seldom came home empty handed. He won close to 200 trophies, saddles, clocks, and more thans thatn we had room. He also put three Championships on his dogs. James worked for big oil, small oil companies, and independents. He opened his own consulting firm and helped his clients unitize fields and invest with good results. He also did expert witness testimony and I have to brag here, but James never lost a case on which he testified! He was aprofessor at Texas A&M University in the 1980s, where he taught Petroleum Engineering.
Upon retirement, James and Peggy moved to Cooper Landing, Alaska. He helped Peggy with her Bed and Breakfast when he wasn’t doing some serious fishing in the “famous front yard,” the mighty Upper Kenai River. His son Jon and his grandson Tres were always competing with him: who caught the first fish, who caught the most fish, and who got their limit first. Good times!
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at the Katy Magnolia Cemetery, in Katy, with Parten Wakefield officiating.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make memorial gifts may do so to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607 and direct donations towards the Burn Care Unit in Galveston.
