Fern Dell Smathers
March 16, 1934 - December 29, 2016

Fern D. Smathers passed away Thursday, December 29, 2016 at the age of 82, a resident of Baton Rouge and a native of Denison, Texas. He served in the US Army with the 3rd Amour Division in Kirchgoings, Germany from 1957 to 1958. Upon returning home he attended Southeastern Oklahoma State in Durant, Oklahoma earning a Bachelors of Science degree and then went on to Texas A&M at College Station, Texas where he received his Masters Degree.

He went to work for DuPont in Victoria, Texas but he moved on into teaching and coaching at Navasota, Belton and San Angelo, Texas. In 2002 the family moved to Baton Rouge to coordinate and support the Believers Club on the LSU campus and have an open home for students to come to. Fern enjoyed reading the Bible in telephone appointments and reading Witness Lees’ Life Study of the Bible with his wife. They had recently finished 1&2Peter Life Study.

He is survived by his wife; Joanna Lee Smathers, sons; Vern Smathers and wife Phoebe, Elton Smathers, daughters; LeAnna Thomas and husband Freddy, and Callie Smathers, 5 grandchildren and 3 great-children. He was preceded in death by his father; Elton Havanna Smathers, mother; Edith Smathers Sims, brothers; E H Smathers, Elmer Smathers and Paul Smathers, a sister; Bonnie Doty.
