James Marvin Prewitt
July 5, 1927 - December 16, 2016

James Marvin Prewitt, D.V.M. passed away at his home on December 16, 2016, at the age of 89. He was born on July 5, 1927 in Granger, Texas to Cecil & Eunice Prewitt. He moved to Taylor, Texas shortly after he was born, and graduated from Taylor High School. He then entered Texas A&M (College Station). He joined the U.S. Navy in March of 1945. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned to Texas A&M and graduated from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 1952. Upon graduation from Veterinary School, he came to Corpus Christi and built his first clinic on Lexington Blvd. (now S.P.I.D.).
When the Texas Highway Department was getting ready to build the freeway, they bought his property. He then relocated across the street, building another hospital in 1957, along with Dr. Paul Brandes (Brandes-Prewitt Animal Hospital). The building he and Dr. Brandes built is still standing and is occupied by Dr. Alan Garett.

Dr. Marvin practiced veterinary medicine for 56 years, retiring at the age of 80, in 2008. Dr. Marvin enjoyed the veterinary profession so much that, after his retirement, he said he felt like he never worked a day in his life.

Dr. Marvin raised Rhodesian Ridgebacks for over 40 years, and American Quarter Horses for 50 plus years. In his last years, he loved sitting on his back porch and watching his horses, dogs, cats, chickens, and Barbado sheep. He said numerous times how he felt so very blessed.
Dr. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Cecil Jr. and Eugene Prewitt, his daughter, Pamela Ann Prewitt and his daughter-in-law, RuAnn Prewitt.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Pamela Haney Prewitt, D.V.M.; son, James Marvin Prewitt, Jr. (Jim) of Bedford, TX; sisters-in-law, Karen (Coy) Reece of Montgomery, Tx, and Pat (Bob) Mitchell of Taft, TX. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues whom he dearly loved and was loved in return.

His family would like to thank Dr. Mike Neff, who has been his M.D. for the past 25+ years, Dr. Charles Clark, Sr. (deceased) who was his M.D. before his retirement, for helping him live beyond his life expectancy based on his family history. Also the doctors & staff at Bay Area Hospital and Spohn Shoreline Hospital, who helped him get through this past year. We also thank his caregiver, Trease Fullingim, for the care she has given him these past 2 years, and all the wonderful friends who have been praying for him.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church (2727 Airline, Corpus Christi, TX. 78414) at 3:00 p.m. on Wed., December 21, 2016.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be sent to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Good Samaritan Rescue Mission, or a charity of your choice.
