Sharon Higgins Dent was born June 17, 1953 in Midland, Texas. She graduated from Midland High School in 1971 and then attended Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. She graduated in 1975 with a BA in French and English. From there, she went on to
receive an MA in Rhetoric and Linguistics at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. After spending two years teaching at Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde, Texas, she joined the English faculty at Texas A&M. She taught Rhetoric and Composition
and Technical Writing and also worked in the writing lab under Ray Leighman. In addition, she worked a great deal with the Texas A&M Aggie football team, and at one point had a former student on every team of the NFL. She married James "J.J." Dent in 1978,
and gave birth to a daughter, Lisa, in 1980. She taught at Texas A&M until 1992.
Following her time at Texas A&M, she joined the faculty at Lee College-Huntsville Center, where she taught at men's prison units in and around the Huntsville, Texas area. She specialized in Developmental English and designed and implemented a peer-tutoring
program, the first of its kind in the nation. She retired from Lee College in 2011. Following her retirement from Lee College, she taught briefly as an adjunct professor at Lone Star College-Tomball. She left Texas and moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado in
June of 2016.
Over the years, in addition to teaching English, she also taught swimming, baton twirling, dance, and Sunday school. Outside of teaching, she also worked as a writer in the fields of journalism, technical writing, and grant writing. Most recently, she had been
providing writing, critical thinking, and ethics assessments for the Monfort College of Business at the University of Northern Colorado. On December 8th, she succumbed to metastatic cancer.
Sharon was a mentor, a role model, a trusted advisor, and a counselor. She was a beacon of generosity and will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
Sharon is survived by her beloved daughter, Lisa Dent of Colorado Springs, Colorado; her sister Shirley Knapp and her husband James of Ennis, Texas and their children and grandchildren; her brother Don Higgins and his wife Tina and their children of Midland,
Texas; many grateful students, and a host of loving friends.
The memorial service for Sharon Higgins Dent will be held at All Faiths Chapel in College Station, Texas, at 2:00pm on Monday, December 19, 2016. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Compassus Hospice and Palliative Care, 1115 Elkton
