Glenn Gilcrest
February 7, 1929 - November 2, 2016
Glenn Thomas Gilcrest finally made it to the astronaut corps and lifted off this planet on November 2nd, 2016 where he is now on course to the heavens. Glenn was born in Hartville, Ohio on Feb. 7, 1929 to Frank Gilcrest and Eva Kreighbaum. Glenn grew up on a farm near Canton, Ohio where he played trumpet in high school, excelled at Latin, and developed what would become a life-long fascination with building model airplanes.
He served in the Korean War during 1951 as a corporal in the 55th Quartermaster Depot. After his service, he obtained his Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from Texas A&M in 1957. Glen then went to work for General Dynamics in the Convair division as a design engineer. During this time, he owned a small plane and spent his time flying over fields and cities, taking spectacular aerial photographs of the land below.
He moved to Pine Bluff in 1971 to work for the Pine Bluff Arsenal as an engineer, retiring in 1995. After retirement, Glenn continued to work hard as a volunteer at the Pine Bluff Literacy Council, a Master Gardener in the Jefferson County Cooperative Extension Service, and a van-driver for veterans traveling to the VA Hospital in Little Rock. His interest in genealogy led him document his family's history and present activities with a regular newsletter, “The Grist”, which circulated among relatives near and far. He was active in Toastmasters and continued engaging in his many hobbies of birdwatching, stamp & coin collecting, homemade firework production, photography, computer programming, gardening, and, of course, model airplane construction. Glenn had also served as a deacon at Christian Life Church.
In addition to his parents, a sister, Virginia Gamble and two brothers, Robert Gilcrest and Dan Gilcrest preceded him in death.
He leaves behind on the earth his wife of 45 years, Beverly McHenry Gilcrest; his daughter Reha Kamas; his step-children, Michele Clark, and Gina Allred; his grandchildren Carrie Kamas, Lucas Kamas, Jonah Kamas, and Ellis Kamas; his step-grandchildren Sommer Milano Harrison, Angela Black, Josh Milano, Laura Clark, Krystal Brown, Randall Allred, and Elizabeth Clark; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Miriam Moore; as well as many other loved ones, friends, and associates.
Funeral services will be Monday, November 7, 2016, 10:00 a.m. at Fuller Hale-South Funeral Chapel with Brother Bill Kiggins officiating.
Visitation will be Sunday, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
