Col. Carl F. Baswell
May 18, 1922 - November 20, 2016

Col. Carl F. Baswell, USA (Ret.), 94, died November 20, at Arkansas Hospice, Hot Springs. "Baz," as he was known to his legion of friends, was born May 18, 1922, in Heber Springs, the youngest child of Ross R. and Ruby (Jones) Baswell. He graduated from Heber Springs High School and then received an associate degree in engineering from Arkansas Tech in 1942. He joined the US Army in September 1942 and in 1943 was transferred to the Army Corps of Engineers. He served for almost 32 years, retiring in 1974.

He served in Europe in World War II, where he was injured in the Battle of the Bulge, and he also served in the Korean War. Subsequent assignments included instructor at the Engineer School, Fort Belvoir, Virginia; Deputy District Engineer for the Little Rock District, where he was the contracting officer for Greers Ferry Dam; command of the 11th Combat Engineer Battalion in Korea; three years as an instructor at the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; and Bavarian District Engineer, US Army Europe Engineer Command, in Augsburg, Germany. During his military career he also completed a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University and a B.S. in Military Science from the University of Maryland.

He was the recipient of the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Air Force Commendation Medal.

Following his retirement from the Army, he became Director for International Operations, KLEE KG, a German international construction and service company (later SKE). He retired from KLEE/SKE in 1992, but continued to serve as a board member and consultant until 2013.

A generous benefactor of Arkansas Tech University, he has two buildings on the Tech campus named for him—Baswell Hall, a dormitory, and Baswell Techionery, the student union. in 2009 he was inducted into the Arkansas Tech Hall of Distinction.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by 7 siblings--Ray, Nathan, Norman and Lawrence Baswell, Lucille Baswell Taylor, and two siblings who died in infancy, Roland and Alice. He was also preceded in death by a beloved niece, Mary Baswell Stark. He is survived by nine nieces and nephews (Linda Baswell Jacobson, Sarah Baswell Harris, Roselle Taylor, Becky Baswell Cordell, Patti Baswell Hand, Reece Baswell, Bill Baswell, Mike Baswell and Chuck Baswell), by his cousins Louise Wood of Russellville, Arkansas, and George Paterson of Wilmette, Illinois, and by a host of friends across the United States and Germany.

Visitation will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, November 25, 2016 with funeral services beginning at 2:00pm at Olmstead Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will follow in the Heber Springs Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Colonel Carl F. Baswell Engineering Scholarship Fund at Arkansas Tech University or to the Cleburne County Historical Society.
