Robert Clay Stubbs, DVM
March 10, 1942 - November 25, 2016
Robert Clay Stubbs D.V.M., age 74, passed away at his home outside of Johnson City, Texas, on November 25th, 2016, after battling the effects of a horse accident for the last several years. Clay was born on March 10, 1942, in Kerrville, Tx, to Nell Nance and R.E. "Beechum" Stubbs, Jr.
After graduating from Johnson City High School in 1960, he attended Texas A&M where he completed his undergraduate studies and the College of Veterinary Medicine requirements all within a short 5 year period. He accomplished all of this while bronc riding on the weekends.
Clay married Lou Ann Holland in 1965, served 4 years in the United States Air Force, and then began his lifelong career as a veterinarian. He worked in Austin, Tx, Coleman, Tx, and then built his first private practice in Burnet, Tx. After seven years, he built his second private practice in Johnson City where he and Lou raised their family. As the Johnson City practice grew, he built a third practice in Blanco, along with numerous small business ventures on the side. While healing up from one of his two back surgeries, he created several bronze statues of western art. He loved spending time with his family and friends doing outdoor activities, dancing, writing poetry, building things in his shop, and always enjoyed a good laugh or a funny story.
After practicing large and small animal medicine for many years working at all hours of the day and night, he decided to follow his ultimate dream of having his own mobile equine practice. His first obstacle was to invent and build a stock trailer that allowed him to travel to his patients as a one-man operation. He went on to invent, patent, and modify numerous equine dentistry tools that are now used by veterinarians throughout the United States. He also taught his dentistry techniques to vets across the country and was well respected by his clients all over the state. He testified in front of the Texas Legislature regarding equine dentistry issues and was named equine practitioner of the year by the TVMA in 2010. He worked on horses up until the day before his passing and this gave him tremendous pride.
In 1999, he married Linette Beal, and she remained his steadfast supporter and best friend for the rest of his days, in addition to being a cherished addition to the entire Stubbs family.
He is survived by his wife Linette; his daughter, Jacqueline Dana Lewis, and son-in-law, Blake, of Del Rio; his son, Evan, and daughter-in-law, Terri, of Lampasas; grandchildren Ellie Lewis (14), Anna Lewis (10), Owen Clay Stubbs (12), Aubrey Stubbs (8), Alice Stubbs (6); his sister, Jackie Stubbs Miller of Johnson City; nieces Jill Riley, and husband, Tommy, of Burnet; Shannon Riebesehl, and husband Jon, of Johnson City, and the mother of his children, Lou Ann Holland, of Marble Falls; as well as countless friends that all had a special place in his heart.
A celebration of his life will be held at the Blanco County Fairgrounds on Sunday, November 27, from 1:00-4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the North Blanco County Volunteer Fire Department and EMS, as he kept both on his speed dial for good reason.
