GALVESTON—
Lauro G. “Larry” Vela, age 97, passed away Friday, September 2, 2016 at The Meridian. He was born on May 26, 1919 in Zapata, Texas and was raised in Hebbronville, Texas. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII after attending the U.S. Naval Academy, where he
was commissioned as an officer. Larry was appointed to the Galveston County Water Board; and in addition, was also a leader in the Rotary Club, the Artillery Club and the Propeller Club. He was also of the Catholic faith. He owned and operated Galveston Laboratories
until the age of 93, when he stepped down due to declining health. Larry will be sadly missed by all of those who knew and loved him.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy A. Vela; his parents, Jose M. Gutierrez and Dora Vela Gutierrez; brother, Jose A. Gutierrez; and sisters, Elma Gutierrez Ortiz and Dora Gutierrez Gonzales.
He is survived by his brothers, Jose M. Gutierrez, Jr. (Faye) and Romeo Gutierrez; sisters, Olivia Munoz (Edmundo), Maria Yolanda Gutierrez and Raquel Raymond (Paul); and numerous nephews, nieces and other family members.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. at J. Levy & Termini Funeral Home Chapel, 2128 Broadway, Galveston, Texas, with Deacon Robert Standridge officiating. Interment will follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock,
Texas. Visitation will be held prior to service time beginning at 12 Noon.
