James Dean Steger
November 3, 2016
James Dean Steger was welcomed into Heaven on Thursday November 3, 2016, just 9 days short of his 40th birthday. Dean was very interested in politics, social justice and helping others in his community. He was a member of Travis Park UMC in San Antonio.
Although his life was cut short unexpectedly, Dean earned degrees in Women's Studies (BS) and Sociology (MS) from UTSA and received an internship in Mrs. Clinton's office at the White House during her husband's presidency. Work on a PhD program at Texas A&M University had begun at the onset of his illnesses. Dean spent many hours in research, teaching and working as a demographer. His compassionate nature led him to make a difference in the lives of those with whom he came in contact including those he met while working at City Year and AmeriCorp after graduating from high school.
Survivors include his mother, Becky Kuykendall (Don); father, James Steger (Debbie); brother, Robert Daryn (Karlie,) and his special Service Dog, Sochi. His grandparents George and Betsey Dykes along with several aunts uncles, cousins and friends also survive him.
A celebration of Dean's life will be held on Saturday, November 12 at 10:00 AM at Travis Park UMC (230 E. Travis St, SATX 78205) followed by a reception at the church. Memorials in Dean's memory may be sent to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) (510 Belknap Place, SATX 78212) or The Human Rights Campaign (give.hrc.org) Interment will be held at a later date.
