Carl Richard "Dick" Voigtel of New Braunfels, formerly of Nacogdoches, went to be with his Lord on October 10, 2016 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. He was born August 3, 1933 in Corvallis, Oregon to parents Richard M. and Irmgard Dietzel Voigtel.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by Carol, his loving wife of 57 years, son Richard Voigtel and wife Cheryl of Belton, daughters Beth Bush and husband Randy of New Braunfels, Kathryn Welch and husband Joe Don of San Marcos, and Patricia Hammond and husband Pearce of Houston. Also surviving are his beloved grandchildren, Kristen Bush of Rochester, NY, Kevin Bush and fiancé Katie David of Houston, Mandy Voigtel of Lubbock, Cooper Voigtel of Waco, Richard and Rose Welch of San Marcos, and Carolyn and Margaret Hammond of Houston. Also surviving are his brother, Rudy Voigtel and wife Kris of Vancouver, WA, brother- in-law Rick Sisk and wife Gerry of Loganville, GA and several nieces and nephews.
Following graduation from Nacogdoches High School in 1950, he attended Stephen F. Austin State University, where he earned his B.S. degree in 1953 and his M.Ed. in 1958. He was awarded his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University in 1970. He served honorably in the US Army in Germany from 1954 until 1956.
Dick had a long career in the field of education, including teaching in elementary and high schools and high school counseling. From 1965-1996, he served SFA in the areas of admissions, placement and financial aid, grants and research, Alumni Association, development, affirmative action, and handicapped student services. After moving into the academic area, he taught in the Department of Counseling and Special Educational Programs, becoming Department Chair in 1988. He retired with the title of Professor Emeritus.
Church and community service were very important to Dick. He served on numerous boards and committees, providing leadership and guidance in many areas. He was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church, Nacogdoches, where he served as member of Chancel Choir, Heart-to-Heart Chorus, Sunday school teacher, Church Administrative Board, Trustees, lay delegate to the Texas Annual Conference, chairman of the building committee for the 1980's addition, and led the project that resulted in the construction of the Scout Lodge. He served on the boards of Nacogdoches ISD, Samaritan Counseling Center, Nacogdoches Public Library, Convention and Visitors Bureau, High School Alumni Association, and he was Scoutmaster for Troop 103.
In retirement, he continued to work with church projects and learned to play golf. He loved to spend time in his woodworking shop making things of use for children, grandchildren and the church. Agriculture was a life-long love, and he enjoyed tending to his cows and watching his pine trees grow. Dick's life was one well-lived, one of dedication to his God, his family, his church, and the community he called home.
Visitation will be held at the Cason Monk – Metcalf Funeral Directors on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 from 6:00-7:30 pm.
The service of Celebration of Life will be at First United Methodist Church, Nacogdoches, on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 10:00 am with Rev. Jeff McDonald and Rev. John Bingham officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be designated to First United Methodist Church, 201 E. Hospital St., Nacogdoches, TX 75961.
