Jones "Penny" Penwell
Former Pagosa Springs resident Jones Clark "Penny" Penwell of Mt. Vernon, Missouri, died on Monday, Sept. 1, 2014, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon. He was 92.

Mr. Penwell was born Dec. 19, 1921, in Crisp, Texas, the son of Clark Moses and Lucille (Jones) Penwell. He grew up in the Dust Bowl era and remembered it well, his family said.

Mr. Penwell was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II. He was a gunner on the USS Oklahoma when the U.S. was attacked at Pearl Harbor. Rescued by the Marines, he bravely continued fighting with them, according to family, and later was honorably discharged in June 1959.

After his military service, Mr. Penwell earned a degree in animal husbandry and engineering. He maintained a ranch in Pagosa Springs for many years and worked as an appraiser for the Bureau of Land Management.

Mr. Penwell was preceeded in death by his wife, Almeda J. (Schallner) Penwell, and son, Alan Lee Penwell.

He is survived by daughters Dale Triplett of Hesperus, Laurel Penwell of Chromo and Tracy Penwell of Phoenix; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Local arrangements are being handled by the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home. Mr. Penwell will be buried at the Broomfield Cemetery in Seiling, Oklahoma, beside his wife.
