Dr. Herbert Bernard Epstein(4/13/1922 - 9/24/2016)
A memorial service for Dr. Herbert "Herb" Bernard Epstein, 94, of Flint, Texas, will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2016, at 11 a.m., Temple Beth El, 1010 Charleston Drive, Tyler, Texas 75703. Rabbi Neal Katz will officiate. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Dr. Epstein passed away on September 24, 2016, in Austin, TX.

Dr. Epstein was born in the Bronx, of New York City on April 13, 1922, to the late Sol and Sophie Epstein. He grew up in New York, and graduated with a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering from New York University. Dr. Epstein arrived in Dallas in 1948 with Chance Vought Aircraft where he served as Vice President of Quality Control. During this time, he also earned an MBA from the University of Texas at Dallas. At retirement, Dr. Epstein was serving as President of Aerospatiale Helicopter.

After "retiring" at age 71, Dr. Epstein returned to school and earned a Ph.D. in Education at Texas A&M University. Thus began a second career teaching in the Engineering and Business Schools at the University of Texas-Tyler until his second retirement at age 90.

Dr. Epstein was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hiking, biking, canoeing, as well as baseball and other sports. He was also a ranked table tennis competitor well into his 80s.

Dr. Epstein is survived by his five children, Susan Poore, Anne French, Mark Epstein, William Barron, and Tim Barron; his brother, Joel Epstein; 7 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Dr. Epstein was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Margaret Epstein, and his sister Bernice Woletz.

Dr. Epstein was a lifelong learner and supporter of education and Judaism. In lieu of flowers, his family asks that memorials be made to the Institute for Curriculum Services at http://www.icsresources.org/give, a nonprofit organization that promotes accurate educational materials and instruction on Jews, Judaism, and Israel for America's K-12 students.
