James Nicholas "Nick" Holland
November 25, 1927 - September 9, 2016

James Nicholas Holland, man of God and true gentleman, died Friday, September 9, 2016, at the age of 88. He moved on from this life to a new life of peace and health and joy forever more, with his Lord. Nick was born on November 25, 1927, to Minnie O’Dell Holland and Lan Morgan Holland in McAllen, Texas. His growing up years were in the valley preparing him for Texas A&M University, where he graduated in the Class of 1950 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering. Being in The Corps of Cadets, serving as Commander of “G” Flight, being steeped in tradition and camaraderie, Nick made lifelong friends there and was a passionate Aggie for the rest of his life. Following graduation, he served two years in the Air Force, and then went to work with Rockwell International. During a sales career spanning 35 years, he began by servicing the Corpus Christi area. He excelled and many promotions took him to Houston, Dallas, Tulsa and back again to Houston where he was Vice President of Sales. Following what he thought was “retirement”, Aggie friends who knew his personality, sales skill and knowledge of valves, asked him to join their company, Environmental Improvements, Inc. He was a part of their team for 12 happy years.
Throughout his adult life, Nick loved all sports, especially golf, spending infinite hours on the course, contented. He participated in Rotary International, finding in them a match for his high standards, value of friendship, and opportunity for service. He was a faithful Christian whose habit each morning was reading a chapter of his Bible and who, over the course of 20 years, served his church well as an usher on Sunday mornings.
In 1989, what began as a simple walk on the beach became a love that flourished 27 years. He married his sweetheart, Joy, in 1991 and treated her like a queen for the rest of his life. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2008, Nick went on to live a life devoted to his Lord, his family and his friends. Nick was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, O’Dell Holland and John Austin Holland, and his sister, Doris Lynn Holland Parker. He is survived by his wife, Joy Kenter Holland of Houston, his son, Keith Scott Holland of Georgetown, and his sister, Marty Holland Conine of Midland, his daughters by marriage, Jana Basili and her husband Steve of Orinda, California, and Alaya Barnes and her husband Swift of San Francisco, California, his grandsons David and Michael Basili, his sisters-in-law, Clo Holland of El Paso, and Mija Kenter Lane of Houston. In addition, he is survived by his nieces, Marty Parker and Mary Parker of Austin, Catherine Holland of Coppell, Jenny Miller and husband, Clay, of Mandeville, Louisiana, Allison Sethney and husband, Bryan of San Antonio, Kelli Kenter of Bellville, and nephews John Holland and wife Kathryn of El Paso, Brad Kenter and wife, Mary Claire of Georgetown, and Kyle Kenter and wife Jayde of Pearland.
A Memorial Service honoring Nick’s life will be held at 2 P.M. Saturday, October 8, 2016, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, in the Chapel, in Houston, Texas. For those wishing to do so, memorial contributions may be directed to Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcomb Blvd., Houston, TX, 77030, or to the charity of one’s heart.
