Charles R. Graham died on February 21, 2014 in San Antonio at age 91.
Born November 13, 1922 in Winters, Texas to Paul Samuel and Ruby Oliver Graham, Charles spent a fondly remembered boyhood growing up in San Angelo.
After graduating from San Angelo High School, he attended the University of Texas, where he proudly energized the fans as the head yell leader. His UT studies were interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the US Navy as a Lieutenant (jg) in the Pacific campaign. After graduating from the Plan II Honors Program at UT, he did graduate work in economics at Columbia University in New York until his sense of adventure led him to Europe. He worked as a civilian educational advisor for the US Army in Germany from 1950 to 1956. On July 9, 1951, he married fellow Texan Jean
Barlow in Paris, France. After starting their family in Germany, Charles and Jean returned to Texas and settled in San Antonio, where Charles worked as a Civil Service employee in personnel management at Kelly and Randolph Air Force bases until his retirement in 1982.
Charley lived a vigorous life, throwing himself wholeheartedly into his undertakings. For a number of years he served as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 132 at the Jefferson Methodist Church. He was involved in local and
national politics and was an active member of the First
Unitarian-Universalist Church of San Antonio from its early days. In his middle years he took up competitive running, bicycling, and marathon canoe racing, and explored rivers all over central and West Texas by canoe.
After retiring, he moved to his beloved "Waldheim" farm near Comfort, where he raised, bred and showed Texas longhorn cattle.
Charles is survived by his wife Jean Graham of San Antonio, three sons Dr. Robin Graham (wife Brooke Miller) of Seattle, WA, Dr. Randy Graham (wife Marguerite) of Knoxville, TN, and Kerry Graham of Austin, grandchildren Brian, Stephen, Travis, Olivia and Jessica, great-grandchildren Keiran and Vaeda, and brother and sister-in-law Paul
and Sara Graham of Abilene.
A memorial service will be held at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church on Saturday, April 19 at 1:30 pm. Memorial donations may be made in his name to the Alzheimer's Foundation, 7400 Louis Pasteur Dr. # 200, San
Antonio TX 78229.
Charles' family would like to express their thanks to the staff of KinCare Assisted Living for their loving care during his last years.
