Jim Averill
February 28, 1932 - September 18, 2016

James Herbert Averill of Uvalde passed away on September 18, 2016 in San Antonio at the age of 84. He was born on February 28, 1932 in Del Rio to Mike Averill and Claire Miller Averill. Jim graduated from Del Rio High School in 1949 and Texas A&M College in 1954. He worked briefly for the Texas Highway Dept. in Del Rio before joining the U.S. Air Force in 1954. After being honorably discharged in 1956, Jim resumed his employment with the Texas Highway Dept. in Del Rio. He went on to work for H.B. Zachry Co. in San Antonio, the Texas Highway Dept. in Alice, and Ike Coyn Engineering in Alice and Laredo before returning to Uvalde in 1960. He then worked for Ross C. Watkins, Inc. in Uvalde, Austin, and Laredo. He married Vanita Carpenter in Alice on August 8, 1960. She preceded him in death on April 1, 2003. From 1968-1981, Jim worked for and owned part of Watkins Bridge Co. in Uvalde, as well as being part owner of Jascon, Inc. in Uvalde from 1981 until his retirement in 2001. He is survived by his son, Douglas Averill of Uvalde; daughter, Susan Shoemaker and husband, Jeff of Fair Oaks Ranch, TX; sister, Kay Daniel and husband, John of Woodland, Alabama; and two grandchildren, Ryan Shoemaker and Kendall Shoemaker. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at 10:00 AM at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Chapel in Uvalde with burial to follow in Sabinal Cemetery. Rev. Tony Gruben will officiate. Pallbearers will be Johnny Jordan, C.V. Sheffield, Wilburn Smith, Bill McWhorter, Bobby Siddons, and Bill Dozier, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be John Sparks, Matis Buentello, and Jimmy Chiles. Memorial donations may be made to the Race Track Chaplaincy of America, 2365 Harrodsburg Rd., Lexington, KY 40504.
