Kenneth J.D. Hurst, 46, of 1100 Tulip St., Liverpool, died Thursday at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Syracuse, after a long illness. Lt. Col. Hurst, a Syracuse native, received an engineering degree from Syracuse University and later served as a combat
engineer during the Vietnam War. In 1982, he earned a master's degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M University and graduated from Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He had been employed as chief safety and occupational health
officer for the Army Corps of Engineers in San Francisco, retiring last month. A recipient of numerous military and civilian awards, his most recent included New York state's Conspicuous Service Award; Commander's Award for Civilian Service, the highest award
granted civilians by the U.S. Army; and the Golden Eagle Award, all earned last year. Surviving are his parents, Kenneth P. and Shirley Hurst of Liverpool; two sisters, Susan Blanding of Fulton and Sally Senecal of Liverpool; two brothers, Kerry of Liverpool
and Capt. Kristopher, serving in Germany; three nieces; and two nephews. Spring graveside services will be in Liverpool Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Liverpool.
