Lawrence Kelminson
1937-2016
Lawrence Kelminson, of Houston, ended his eight-year struggle with Dementia on September 4th. Despite these recent years of difficulties, Larry will be fondly remembered as a caring husband and friend, a loving grandfather, and a man who knew something about almost everything.
Larry graduated from Texas A&M and spent over 30 years in the field of accounting eventually running his own successful firm. He went into a self-induced semi-retirement in 1991 to make time to care for his step-son John, diagnosed with terminal cancer with less than a year to live. A decade later Larry was still caring for John and had become "the man behind the scenes" enabling John to win CanCare Volunteer of the year.
Through his decade of caring for John, Larry began to expand his hobby of antiquing eventually drawing his wife Margaret into his self-proclaimed second career. The two spent many happy hours on the hunt for "great deals" while making friends and acquaintances across the country. Thus began Larry's reputation as a man who knew something about almost everything. Larry's life-long interest in learning naturally fed into his study of antiques as well as the history surrounding them. Larry was a natural instructor to many but perhaps his grandchildren recognized it the most as the loving granddad who's amazing intellect was like a walking encyclopedia.
Larry is preceded in death by his step-son John Middleton. Larry is survived by his wife Margaret Middleton-Kelminson; his children Stephen Kelminson and Lara Kelminson; his step-children Jamie and her husband Chris Duhon, Allison and her husband Kevin Kennedy, and Hansa Middleton; and grandchildren Taylor and Katelyn Kennedy, Brian, Madeline, and Matthew Duhon, and Ellie, Ben, Emma Kelminson. A Memorial Service and reception will be held at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, September 6th, at 2PM. The family wishes to thank Amazing Place Houston, supporting Hospice staff, and especially his caregivers Yvonne and Mary. In lieu of flowers, Larry requested donations to Alzheimer's research or to the Amazing Place Houston.
