Samuel Barina
August 9, 1965 - August 31, 2016

“Wherever the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanity.”
--Hippocrates

Dr. Samuel J. Barina, M.D.

Devoted husband, father and physician, Sam Barina passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, August 31st, 2016. He was 51 years old.

Born August 9, 1965, in Austin, Samuel John Barina was the oldest son of John and Dionisia G. Barina. His father, a retired judge from Bell County, now survives him; his mother enjoyed a career as a Registered Nurse for Scott & White Hospital (and is now deceased). Sam had one brother, Bobby Barina, who also lives on. Even at a young age, Sam was always serious and studious, a mature soul who never let his parents worry about him much or gave them any trouble. He was incredibly intelligent, with a dry wit to match. In 1983, he graduated with Honors from Temple High School as an officer of the Math Club. Sam then set his sights on Texas A&M University and later, University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston (from which he graduated in 1988 and 1992, respectively). He completed his residency at Scott & White Memorial Hospital.

While at TAMU, Sam was not only hardworking but also lucky in love. He met Tricia (Schwab) Barina as a student; they married in 1989. Eventually, two children joined their family: Tristen and Garrett. Sam also loved collecting sports memorabilia and playing fantasy football. He enjoyed attending all Texas A&M sporting events and supporting his beloved Aggies. They were a small but tightly knit family, active also in their faith as parishioners at St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church in College Station.

To Sam, family came first, followed closely by his patients; with both, he was loving and generous, caring and sweet. He served patients throughout Bryan-College Station as a physician with Brazos Valley Internal Medicine and had been in practice for 22 years at the time of his death. In remembering Sam, his family will miss his many endearing (and slightly OCD) qualities, while his patients will miss his sardonic sense of humor and his expertise.

Surviving Sam now are his beloved wife, Tricia, their children Tristen and Garrett, as well as Sam’s father, John Barina, his brother, Bobby Barina, and his nephew, Joaquin. Sam’s mother predeceased him.

The Life Celebration for Dr. Sam Barina will be held beginning with Visitation on Thursday, September 8, 2016, from 6-8pm at Hillier Funeral Home in College Station, where a Rosary (at 6pm) will be followed by memory sharing. A Mass of Christian Burial will then be held at 10:30 on Friday, September 9th at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in College Station. Interment will follow at Aggie Field of Honor. The family has asked everyone to wear maroon in honor of Dr. Barina. In lieu of flowers—and in Sam’s memory—donations may be made to an educational fund that has been established for his children. Contact any Prosperity Bank for more information.
