Dr. Curtiss M. Bailey, Professor Emeritus of Animal Science at the University of Nevada Reno, passed away on June 15, 2016 after an extended battle with colon cancer. Following service in our nation's military, Dr. Bailey held a long and distinguished career at the University of Nevada for 30 years from 1960-1990.

Dr. Bailey was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1927. He attended Aurora High School and received his diploma in science from the Farragut Naval Academy, located in St. Petersburg, Florida. He was awarded the Admiral Farragut Academy honors diploma as a member of the first graduating class in 1945. Following his graduation, Dr. Bailey began an active duty military service career that spanned the years from 1945 to 1955, first as an Aerographer's Mate in the U.S. Coast Guard, then in the U. S. Army as a First Lieutenant in the Military Police, stationed at San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Bailey concluded his military service in 1960 in the U. S. Army Reserve.

Following his military service, Dr. Bailey completed basic courses at Case Western Reserve University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Husbandry from the University of Wisconsin, a Master of Science degree from Texas A & M University, and in 1960 a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in Genetics and Animal Husbandry.

His professional positions included Research Assistant at the University of Wisconsin followed by a long and distinguished career at the University of Nevada, Reno. Dr. Bailey taught advanced graduate level courses in animal genetics, statistics, and experiment design as well as other animal science courses. He also directed thesis research programs for 20 graduate students.

Dr. Bailey was a member of the American Society of Animal Science and he authored numerous scientific papers on beef cattle breeding. He was an early advocate for the development of lean, antibiotic free beef, and devoted over 30 years of research to that topic. His research carried him far and wide, including collaborative research projects at Ohio State University and the University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland.

He also served in the prestigious position of Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Animal Science from 1984-1987 which captured a national/international readership. Based on his exemplary performance and efforts to improve all areas of the journal, he received the College of Agriculture Award of Service as Editor-in-Chief of the journal. He also served as advisor to the Nevada Beef Cattle Improvement Association for 13 years. In 1982 he received the Award of Merit for Outstanding Research in the College of Agriculture.

His other organizations and accomplishments include serving as President of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity while attending Wisconsin University in 1950. He also served three terms as Chairman of the Western Regional Beef Cattle Breeding Committee. He participated in many committees at UNR including the Scholastic Standing Committee, University Policy Committee on Academic Standards, Traffic & Parking Board, Grade Appeals Board, The Research Peer Review Board, Chairman of the Curriculum Committee, and the Desert Research Institute Committee.

Following his retirement in 1990, he moved from Nevada to Newcastle, CA. He enjoyed travel, on-going professional commitments, and country living on his five acre ranch. He developed a family vineyard, raised beef cattle, and endlessly added improvements to his property. From a young age he always wanted to be a farmer and to that end, he died on his beloved country estate. He will always be remembered for his unwavering honesty, decency, intelligence, and staunch hard work.

He is survived by his sons Clyde Bailey (Marietta), Curtiss Bailey (Ruth), and daughters Leslie Lauer (Michael), Lisa Weston (Jim). He leaves behind eight grandchildren; Bailey, Cailen, Christopher, Jack, Alexandria, Robert, Curtiss Andrew, and Heather.
