Raymond Virgil Young
(May 6, 1929 - August 23, 2016)

Raymond Virgil Young, 87, Amarillo resident, went home to his Lord, Tuesday, August 23, 2016, with his wife present.

The cremation of Virgil, and the care of his wife, are under the direction of Hereford Heritage Funeral Home, 411 E. 6th Street.

Virgil, was born Raymond Virgil Young on May 6, 1929, in Hereford, Texas, to Eursel William and Havana Margaret (Davison) Young. Virgil graduated from Texas A&M University in May of 1950. Shortly following his graduation, Virgil received his 2nd Lt. Commission, and entered the U. S. Army on November 21, 1950 in Hereford, TX, and was Honorable Discharged August 3, 1952. Virgil served in Germany as a Company Motor Officer. He received the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany). On March 29, 1968 in Hereford, Virgil married his soulmate, and the love of his life, Paula Marie (Green) Young. They loved to travel, and did, domestic and foreign. He was the Vice President, Secretary and Publisher of the Amarillo Railroad Museum, and member of the Texas Teachers Retirement Association. Virgil taught students in the HISD and teachers in Region 16. He was the Region 16 Media Director. Virgil was a writer, and wrote many articles for the National Model Railroad Association Magazine. Virgil loved to dance, was an avid reader, collect railroad models, watch movies “over and over”, sing in the Amarillo Civic Choir and play the guitar. Virgil loved the piano so much, that he took piano lessons at the age of 70. He was a Christian and loved his Lord.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; 1 son, Raymond Michael Young; 1 daughter, Carol Young; and, 1 sister, Margaret Louise Coombs.

Survivors are his wife, Paula Marie of the home in Amarillo; 2 daughters, Nancy Jobe and husband Jimmy of Plano, TX, Laurie Davidson of Round Rock, TX; 1 sister, Mary Ann Ashley and husband Adrian of Centreville, VA; 6 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; caregivers/friends, Anita Gutierrez, Linda Silva and Nancy Zimmerman; and, a host of many educators and friends.

Paula suggests memorials to the Amarillo Railroad Museum, Inc., P. O. Box 31105, Amarillo, TX, 79120, or, a Charity of Choice.

Virgil’s wife Paula, wishes to extend a great “Thank You” to Dr’s. “Whit” Walker, Dr. Lane Cox, caregivers; Anita Gutierrez, Linda Silva and Nancy Zimmerman; Accolade Homecare and Hospice of Amarillo; and, the Hereford Heritage Funeral Home Staff.
