Dr. Oliver Forrest Goen, 94, passed away peacefully Sunday, August 28, 2016, at his home in College Station, Texas. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Marcella Ruetz Goen, daughter of Morris and Alice Ruetz (Binford) of Brenham, TX. He was also preceded in death by his daughter Karen Goen in 2010.

Oliver was born and raised on the Goen Ranch in the Harvey community located in South Central Brazos County. He was born on September 26, 1921, the son of Clyde F. and Grace E. McSwain Goen. His grandparents, Will Goen and Nancy Pate Goen came to Brazos County in the 1870s.

Dr. Goen attended A&M Consolidated schools through the 10th grade. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan, however, because of the reshuffling of the school district when Carter Creek became the dividing line between College Station schools and Bryan schools.

Dr. Goen’s military service included service in the US Marine Corps during World War II and he was recalled as a reservist during the Korean War into the U.S. Air Force Medical Service as a Veterinary Officer. Dr. Goen continued to serve until his retirement on September 1, 1975, after 28 years of service. Upon retirement from the US Air Force, he moved back to the family ranch and continued to ranch until his death.

Dr. Goen received many awards and acknowledgments during his service:
*Decorated for Meritorious Service as Chief of Veterinary Services in the 6045th
USAF Hospital at OSAN AFB, Korea, McGuire AFB, and 3510th USAF Hospital,
Randolph AFB, San Antonio, TX from October 1964 – June 1967.
*US Air Force Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters.
*Outstanding professional skill, knowledge, and leadership aided immeasurably
in identifying problems associated with maintenance of proper military standards
for food service establishments and in providing technical assistance needed to
meet those standards.

While on active duty, he was stationed in Savannah, Georgie; Austin, Texas; Ramstein, Germany; Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; San Antonio, Texas; Osan AFB, Korea and McGuire AFB, New Jersey.

Dr. Goen was a Mason, a member of the Shrine and Sojourners. He served on the board of the Brazos County Farm Bureau for a term and he was a member and senior deacon of Bright Light Free Will Baptist Church, where he continued to serve until his death. He was also a Life Member of the American Legion Earl Graham Post 159.

PaPaw Goen’s survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Clyde and Genia Goen, and Tom and Cathy Goen, all of College Station; seven grandchildren, Laura and Jim Wilson of Round Mountain, Texas; Mary and Stephen Mobley of Manor, Texas; Kristy and Andrew Humphrys of College Station, Texas; Diane and Joe Alvarado of Centennial, Colorado; David and Stephanie Goen of College Station, Texas; Erin and Alex Price of Austin, Texas; and John and Rachel Goen of Albuquerque, New Mexico; as well as nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 31, 2016, from 6-8pm at Hillier Funeral Home of College Station. Services will be at 1:00pm, Thursday, September 1, at the Bright Light Free Will Baptist Church on Hwy 30 in College Station. Graveside services will follow at the College Station Cemetery on Texas Ave. in College Station.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bright Light Free Will Baptist Church, 11200 State Highway 30 College Station, Texas 77845.
